27-09: Careless improvisation

Ok. I just NEEDED to record something. The right hand pattern was took from a Schubert impromptu (can't remember wich one)

I decided to record an improvisation without caring about mistakes or anything, just pure and simple pleasure.

So, here we go. It's on Gb

That's a pretty little riff you've got there. Keep working on stuff like that, it can't hurt. I spent the first couple of years mostly toying with riff type stuff before truly "taking off" so to speak. So keep it up. And, you could take it a different direction and do "stop start" composition instead of free improvisation.

Could you explain this "stop start" composition?

By that I mean that some or all of the music you play in a given piece is slowly "crystallizing" or taking a form that doesn't change much between performances, almost like you're evolving a written piece from improvising it. So for example, if you re-record the above improvisation, with the same riff and it eventually coalesces into a complete piece that you could write down, that'd be one possible end-result of stop-start composition. In my case, I never really developed the desire or knack for this type of writing, but I know that some others on this board have, such as Ted. And, I believe Pianowolfi has worked this way to a degree, too.
