There's some old story about Peter Donohoe being asked to shave his beard off by EMI, I believe. That said, there are quite a few bears around, I believe. Off the top of my head, there's Demidenko, Jando, Radu Lupu, Leon Fleisher and Hamelin these days, I believe.

Or Saint-Saens?

If I'm just underexposed and there are folks going this route, then my bad and never mind, but if you can pull it off well/nicely and not look like some protesting "occupy wall street" hippie or anything like that, and it looks good, is it inappropriate?

Off topic here, but YOU opened the door:  ". . . and not look like some protesting 'occupy wall street' hippie?"  Hippie??  A little respect, please, for the thousands across America who are protesting the robbery of American democracy by the billionaire-class, those who have purchased the US government through lobbyists and dismantled the republic and turned it into an oligarchy of rich financiers.  You make me want to grow a beard just to be considered on sight to be one of their ranks.  As it is, I'm a brother and supporter of the occupiers.  I thought people in the arts, like musicians, were our allies.  Guess not.  Maybe Rupert Murdoch will finance your music education and support the arts in your community. He's certainly not doing that in MY city.

The billionaire "class"?   And here I had always thought people were individuals!   And Rupert Murdoch is not an American, he is Australian!   And if someone works hard and earns his money honestly, I don't feel that he has any obligation at all to hand it over to you, just because you don't have it.   You have the same opportunity as he did to work hard, save and invest.

honestly? That's a rather ironic word to use in the very next sentence after you referred to Rupert Murdoch.

Just what exactly is that supposed to mean?   Are you saying that people are defined by their "class"?   People are individuals!   The fact that someone's income is or is not at a particular level tells you absolutely nothing about them as people.    And you, believe it or not, don't know anything at all about me, just because you read something I posted with which you disagree.

I actually wasn't referring to Murdoch there.   The unfortunate placement of the next sentence after the Murdoch reference may have been misleading.   I was referring in general to anyone who works hard and earns money honestly.

Appreciate the chance to correct any misimpression.

Getting back to the topic of performance, in the Chopin Ballade 2 many performers often play the sempre sostenuto legatissimo from the first measure to the Presto con fuoco starting in the 47th measure. I like the way Zimerman plays it with a nice consistent flow and rhythm.

I am working on the Ballade 2 and I am wondering if it is OK to imitate other pianists styles if it is that you think it best fits what Chopin really wanted? Thanks. Chopin didn't have a beard but I often do especially in the winter. ;)
