Jeux d'eau and Mephisto Waltzer

Hi,

A friend of mine played these two pieces at a competition in The Netherlands.

What do you think of his piano playing?  I'm really looking forward to your opinion.

The sound quality is pretty bad to be able to judge.  In fact, I stopped the jeux d'eaux after a few minutes.  I just didn't understand it.  The Liszt was a little bit better to recognize, but I would be in grave difficulty if I had to judge his playing.  The fingers seem to be there - there are moments where I THINK I hear artistry - but it's really difficult to tell.

I honestly don't get it either why this competition was held in by far the biggest hall there is in the Netherlands. I actually did record this with a decent audio recorder, but the reverb of the hall is just too heavy to get everything properly recorded from such a distance. I don't see why it's completely unlistenable though, as long as you turn up the volume of your speakers a bit.

I seem to recognize that spectacularly ugly backdrop. Is't this The Doelen in Rotterdam ?

It looks like very competent and virtuoso playing. Not completely unlistenable but I agree with Birba that it's impossible to judge the fine details of articulation, dynamics, etc. The Jeux d'Eaux seemed
a little too literal and metronomic to me - one would expect a bit more ebb and flow and all that.

So how did you fare in that competition ?

I imagine it's probably difficult to "judge" from this perspective, but as a listener I feel very well and I like it very much and it makes me want to hear more from you
