Question about ZoomQ3HD
on: February 26, 2012, 01:31:22 PM
Help!

When I export my finished movie to my PC, it says it is a quick time movie -.mov. Do I need to convert this to upload it to PianoStreet or YouTube?  Or is there a way to record directly an MPEG4 file?

The same thing happens with my Nikon SLR -always a Quick Time Movie.  I suppose I could go a googling to find the answer, but I am hoping someone will have specific knowledge about uploading to the forums here. ( I know about attatchments) but what movie format?
When a search is in progress, something will be found.

I think   ZoomQ3HD doesn't work with Windows Media Player... Try to download from Internet (it's free) VLC media player, it's a  very good software,  reads virtually every format. I've never had problem uploading  videos recorded with ZoomQ3HD using it....Let me know if it works!

Yes, mov files are supported by youtube.

However, I have a Zoom Q 3 (Not the HD version, but I checked the technical details of the HD version and it's exactly the same!) and I used it sometimes, but I must say that I am in no way satisfied with it because it leaves you only three options to adjust the input level: High, Low or Auto. And while the microphones for sure are quite okay, this restriction is just ridiculous and makes this device basically worthless for any serious use in classical music recording. The "low" setting makes the whole recording way too soft, the "high" setting causes permanent hiss in the forte passages, and the "Auto" setting steamrollers systematically all dynamic nuances.

So I'd strongly advise against purchasing such a device.

I second the VLC recommendation.

Youtube supported formats:

Wolfi, have you tried recording sound independently of the Q3?  You could sync video and sound later on in editing.

Then again if you are willing to do separate audio and video recordings, an inexpensive DSLR would be a good option as it will give much better image quality. You also have the option of buying or renting some really good lenses to use with it.

Can you suggest me a simple way to  syncronize audio and video? I've tried Windows Movie maker, but it doesn't read the ZoomQ3 files...
Do you know the digital camera JVC HD Everio? Is it's the sound recording better than the ZoomQ3?

I am experimenting with that. I use a DV camcorder and my Edirol R 09. But I haven't yet managed to get the sound and the video fully in sync. I am working with iMovie but I'm not that good at it yet.

An easy way to sync audio and video is to use a clapperboard or slate.  You can make one yourself from things lying around the house.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clapperboard

The idea is that there is both a visual (the movement of the clapper) and and auditory (the sound of the clap) cue that can be lined up in editing.

Since the Q3 does audio, an easy way to sync is to align the spike of the clap from both the Q3 audio and external audio recording.  Viewing wav graph of both tracks helps in this task.

Thank you Quantum! Yes I know about this possibility, so far I just clap my hands. My difficulty lies in learning to handle the video editing program, which is a mystery to me. I see no exact times, I see no wave curves, nothing. But that's too much off topic, I think.

I use "handbrake" to convert .movs to mp4 files. Its free and seems to do an okay job..  saves me uploading the monstrous mov files the iphone creates.

worse so for me..  I don't have a hard line internet connection - I just tether my phone, and i have a pretty limited data allowance at 7GB per month, and the speed varies a lot from semi ok to appalling...  One video my iphone made was approaching 2GB..   I could probably learn the hammerklavier in the time it wouldve taken :P:P:P
