Comments on this practice routine
on: May 08, 2012, 02:24:42 PM
Hi, this is my first post here. I am hoping to get some advice from teachers and experienced players. I'm an adult who has been playing piano for a few years on and off without a disciplined practice routine in place. I have taken lessons from various teachers over the years on and off but am not currently doing that. My long term goals with the piano are to play Jazz and Prog rock material. Here's what I'm currently doing:

--All Major Scales (with metronome, eighths, triplets, sixteenths)
--Hannon (HS, around 60 mm, focusing on posture and relaxation, I have back and shoulder tension issues)
--Bach (just started on the first 2 part invention, I have learned a few of these in years past but have forgotten them, including this one. Learning 3 measures a day, HS)
--Working through a Jazz Book, called Solo Jazz Piano: The Linear Approach
, this is a very thorough book designed to get you playing Solo Jazz Piano with walking bass lines etc... I really take my time on this. It includes theory, exercises, and practice tunes. https://www.amazon.com/Solo-Jazz-Piano-Linear-Approach/dp/0634007610
--Working on a Genesis Prog Rock song/solo.

I practice around 2 hours a day more on weekends. Is this too much different material? Should I focus it on one style? etc...

Thanks.

I can't comment on the routine itself, but may I ask which Genesis song?  Is it Firth of Fifth?  ;D

No. Not doing that one quite yet. It is "The Cage" off The Lamb...
