I listen to a little of everything - jazz, classical violin, classical cello, classical piano, rap, doom metal, rock.... I think it calms my brain to listen to music besides classical piano.

I do.
I think its a great way of expressing oneself through lyrics.

Me neither. That's my opinion. That's your opinion. Now what do we achieve by going around shouting about it...

Or are we trying to create some kind of an elite to raise ourselves above others? If anything sucks as much as rap does, that'd be it.

I'm with you Collette - So much of the POP culture stuff lacks originality, it's more based on audience ratings, and made up of overly *produced* shows, music, and all.  Brittney Spears is a great example.  She's definitely talented, but without her *team* of production artists, she's not much ( except what you guys might think)

It's refresheing to hear any new music that comes from the heart.

I used to not like Rap, well the stuff that gets played on the Radio, but I never realised that there was a "serious" competitive and improvisational sort of society for rappers. I think that stuff doesn't get played at all, and can't be counted as POP music.... It is interesting how they arrange words to suit their emotions and stories they rap about, and they all rhyme, and thats an acheivement in itself... I still don't really understand the "art" of rap, but I think that it isn't easy to be one of those original and serious rappers.

I can understand why a lot of you don't like rap music, but the to say that it's garbage is quite irrational. Sure their is a lot of rap that might sound unappealing: the lyrical content (sex, drugs, violence), but that's not rap always was, nor is that what rap is today.

One of the things that make rap different is its fundamental principle of verbal expression; the origins of rap also have very big impact on what it is today. Rap was made by urban dwellers as an outlet to tell their life stories to people who would listen. Now to say that's what rap is now wouldn't be accurate, but it is imprtant to understand that rap isn't what you hear on the radio or watch on tv; it's emcompasses a whole sub-culture that people never see.

The effort invested in a rap is substantial, the use of rhythm while cosistently keep a rhyme scheme requires tremendous skill. However, the music profession has been reduced to an effort to push as many cds as possible which has compromised the creativity and the freedom of the artists to a certain extent.

Well to preven a long story from beig longer I'll just say this: To insult a music form is really unecessary, because everyone listens to music for different reasons. I can say almost the same thing rock, techno and anything else that's new. I've heard these same negative comments about classical music and my reaction's been the same. I'm not saying that you ppl should like rap or anything, because people have tastes and their are bound to be ppl unwilling to expand their musical pallettes, but I'm just asking that you refrain from making statements like "Rap/Rock/Heavy Metal is garbage."

I have nothing wrong with backround music with the great beat, but i do agree that something that has f*** as every other word is garbage. If rap didnt have that than it would be good.

Listen to Rap... Listen to Piano...

Just don't listen to both at the same time  ;)

By the way, Rap is not "grabage". Just because it isn't "serious" music doesn't make it grabage... It certainly is much better than those avant-garde modern composers who seem to have forgotten that music is supposed to be pleasant to hear.

I don't really understand what you are trying to say. How can something which is unpleasant to the ear be regarded as "good music"? It may have artistic value of some kind, even a quality of a masterpiece, but it isn't "music" unless this quality can be heard with a pair of good ears.

At least, that is how I define music. Perhaps other people would disagree, maintaining that "music" is any form of art which relies on sound... But to me it seems obvious that music should be appreciable by the ears alone.

Anyway, good atonal or avant-garde music is very hard to write. A medicore composer in the late 18th century could still write decent sonatas, but a medicore modern composer will get nothing but awful noise. Only the greatest contemporary masters manage to porduce good atonal music, and even then it can be done only by leaving a bit of tonality in.

Gladly, most composers today already abandoned the idea of "breaking the rules at all costs" and now they only use as much atonality or special effects as their music really needs. Not surprisingly, this realization has done wonder to the quality of their music.

Okay, it's been a long time since i've posted on this. Rap, to me now, is not garbage, BUT... not gold either... Well, it's hard not to appreciate, just a little, those hard core poeple who try so hard to be up there... they are giving all they've got.
But still i prefer classical.

And it is much better than those avant garde music in my opinion. I mean, any old fool can make that sort of mus... stuff.

hey look at self

self's going to start a thread to bash a genre of music

why?

because self detests the manner in which the mainstream form of said genre is portrayed

self will completely ignore the fact that the entire genre doesnt suck/contain violence/offensive lyrics/and hoes

self will even completely ignore the fact that sex/violence/controversy sells

and thats the reason certain forms of said genre are perpetuated

why?

because we all know we should things based on what we see on tv and hear on the radio
