Help me to rank Bach's repertoire
on: June 05, 2012, 04:21:19 PM
Hello!

Can anybody help me to understand if Bach's Partitas are more difficult than English Suite, are the same level or not? For me Partita in B flat seems much more easier for some point of view than the English suite in G minor...What do you think about according to your experience in playing Bach?
Beethoven piano Sonata 26 op.81 "Les Adieux"
Bach WTC I n.14; II n.12, n.18
Chopin op.10 n.12
Rachmaninov prelude 12 in G#min op.32
Moscheles op.70 n. 15

I can only play at around grade 4 or 5, so much of Bach's work is way out of my league, but I think it is difficult to rank his multi-movement works because the movements are not all equally difficult. Even I can play some movements from some of the suites, but cannot even dream of playing some other movements from the same suites.

I think it depends on the individual movements... I played the G minor english suite, and am now working on the Bb major partita... I think the prelude from the G minor was a beast, but according to my syllabus the Partita is a level higher... I guess I'll wait and find out!

The Gavotte in the G minor suite was probably about a grade 8 RCM (not tough, but quite jumpy), and the Allemande was probably about a grade 9 level... but the Prelude and Gigue were much tougher (in my opinion) than a prelude and fugue.

So far from the Partita, the prelude is very manageable... that's all I've looked at so far lol
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

it's imposiible to rank these works, but it can be said generally that the biggest amount of "easier" parts are in french suites, then in english suites and finally partitas.
