I used to think that pianists like Rach, Horowitz and Hofmann recorded all pieces they could play well but that is not the case at all.

Does anybody know any reports of what pieces Rachmaninov and Hofmann  performed but never recorded? Or perhaps have heard Horowitz play pieces he never recorded?

I have heard that all 3 of them could play all of Beethoven´s sonatas  :o at least at one point of time in their life.

As you can imagine, Lazar Berman played Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody #6 superbly, but as far as I know he never recorded it.

Too bad that there are so few bootlegs out there from the old days.  :-[

I somewhat recall Horowitz played some Scriabin pieces that were never recorded.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Boris Berezovsky plays Ravel's Scarbo!!!!

I don't know if he played Ondine or Le Gibet, but there's a bad YouTube recording of him playing Scarbo at I think a concert hall?  The guy was like sitting aaaaaaaallll the way on the highest section of the concert hall on the veeeeerrrrrrry last left seat and he recorded it from there!  Are you kidding me?!  You couldn't get a better seat?  Or buy a real camera?!  But despite the awful recording device, his Scarbo is so good!  Too bad he didn't record it...

The quality was so bad, it was probably filmed with a box of crayons...  And you couldn't hear the coughing at least!  The background noise drowned out all of the ruckus at least!

I've got (good) news for you, he recorded the whole Gaspard  de la Nuit (and a pile of other Ravel). On Amazon and everything, though not apparently in the current catalogue.

You are lucky to have that recording at all.  Many concert halls forbid unauthorized recording.  It is very noticeable to bring in a quality camera and recording gear and set it up for a good viewing angle.  Ushers are often trained to spot people with recording devices.  I've personally seen ushers that will forge through a row of 20 filled seats in the middle of a quiet piece and demand you cease recording immediately.  If you refuse, you could be kicked out or even land yourself in legal trouble.

If you want to see what it takes to get a decent shot, observe the people with press credentials come in with a serious video tripod and ENG camera, then setup in a place with clear sight lines.
