Amateur Piano Group in London
on: June 21, 2012, 12:01:14 PM
I have set up an amateur piano group in London. We next meet at Steinway Hall near Bond Street tube on July 7th 2012, it would be great to see some PianoStreet members there!

this is cool indeed. i love that the performances are recorded and posted as well. i would love to start a group like this in the states, alas there isn't a large market in my geo right now (i.e no large piano dealers, prolly not a big pool of adult amateurs), but i plan on moving in the next few years and will definately approach the steinway hall in that metro area (and other dealers and venues as well) about possibly starting similar group.

really wonderful! best of luck and i hope it grows and grows

The last two events have sold out, so it's great to meet and hear so many fellow piano enthusiasts . 49410 - definitely try approaching Steinway Hall or any other piano dealers and see if they'll help you out. We've mostly had a good response from dealers and they have been interested in the idea.

What a wonderful idea?   I envy you and would love to join up.   Sadly I am not in the London area or even the UK!

Best of luck :)

I just found out from your website that it's no longer a Model D, but only a Model B :-[.  Is that change directed against the amateurs?  Or is it because the old Model D has been sold and they decide not to use a D for all concerts from now on?

Please let us know which Model B it is.  I've played the one in their practice room many times (a model made in the 1970s I think) and have to say I'm not particularly impressed.

If you are after playing a good Steinway, I suggest having the event in the future at 1901 Arts Club near Waterloo station.  Their Model C is beautiful, and the venue probably costs less to hire as well.

Yes it is a Steinway B, this is nothing to do with the amateur event, the change was made about 2 months prior to our event. At the event in Dulwich on 27 Jan 2013, it will be a Steinway C.

The 1901 Arts Club is beyond our budget at the moment but it is a lovely venue.

Thanks for answering my specific queries and uploading the videos.  You must keep this going.  If it had not been for other commitments on Saturday afternoons, I would certainly have joined you.

Yes the third event is being planned as I type, should be some time in October but the date is TBC.

There is also a date fixed for an event in Dulwich, South London on 27 Jan 2013. This is on a Steinway C and will possibly be opened up to duets and maybe even other instruments if some pianists want to gain some experience of accompanying. I haven't really thought about the exact details yet so open to suggestions.

Lorain, that is a great idea in London. Many times I tried and tried in Sydney, but its really pitty, that in this era, lack of classical commitment.

15 yeas ago, we used to have a Chopin society, but the owner now he is retired for  8  years.....so may be one day....

I am very happy for you.

Our next amateur music group meets in South London at a theatre with a Steinway C piano on Sunday 27 January 2013. Full details can be found on the link below. The event is open to all instruments, not just pianists. Duets and ensembles most welcome!

One more date added as January was too far away!

20 October 2012 at St Olave's Church. The venue has a Bosendorfer grand piano.

Unfortunately, it looks like this event has been cancelled again.

Yes we had to cancel the previous events due to lack of interest in the venue/location.

However, the good news is that we have an event coming up on Sunday 27 January 2013 and it's nearly sold out so the move to a theatre in South London has proved popular. The venue has a Steinway C Piano. There are spaces left for 2 performers.
