pick me some audition pieces.
on: June 26, 2012, 04:43:24 PM
Hello everyone, this is my first post on here. Although I wouldn't consider myself new since I'm on here reading everyday.

I need your help picking audition pieces.  What I will need is pieces for the standard requirements one bach prelude and fugue, one sonata by Mozart Haydn, or beethoven. one virtuoso etude, a romantic piece that isn't to easy, and some modern piece.

I'd say I'm about a level 7 I suppose level 6 pieces take me about a day to get performance ready and level 8 and up is a bit of a struggle for me.

I wouldn't be auditioning for another 3 years I just want to have all the pieces picked out learned and ready to go with out a doubt in my mind wether or not I can play them. So any advice would be awesome.

I was thinking about picking bachs prelude and fugue in b major from book two, I started learning beethovens pathetique sonata 1st movement earlier this month however it seems to easy, any recommendations would be appreciated. thank you.

p.s. im not looking for the standard repertoire that the judges have heard a million times. once again thanks.  :)

Don't play Beethoven's Pathetique sonata if you don't want want something that is overplayed.  On the other hand, you say it's too easy for you, so perhaps you have what it takes to make an exceptional performance out of it to impress the judges.
Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3

well let me clarify its easy to learn and to play at a moderate speed. I'm still rather sloppy when taking it at full tempo. but i have a while to go i'll probably learn some other sonatas but keep this one around

You'll be much more advanced in three years, so I suggest you wait until you choose your pieces. If you decide on them and learn them now, then by the time you need to audition you will be extremely bored with the pieces, and the judges will see this. Now, I'm not saying you should wait until the last minute for this audition, but give it time.

Also, what is the audition for?

its for college more specifically for my masters audition. I'm no piano god and don't pretend to be so I would think the top conservatories are a little out of my range although it doesn't hurt to aim high. Since I'm from Texas I would really like to remain in tx so I was thinking UNT
