Best Left Hand "Etude"?
on: July 19, 2012, 08:39:58 PM
After the "Revolutionary" Etude Op.10 No.12, I need to do some more pieces that help build the left hand technique. As of right now, I have these two pieces:

Rachmaninoff-Moment Musicaux Op.16 No.4
Rachmaninoff-Prelude Op.23 No.2

Since these two pieces are two epic for me to choose, I need some assistance on choosing, so please help me choose! All suggestions would be appreciated.

P.S. If you have any suggestions on any other FUN piece(s) that help the left hand technique, please do post. Thanks!
Bach Prelude and Fugue BWV848
Beethoven Piano Sonata Op.13
Chopin Etude Op.10 No.4

You could try the Godowsky transcriptions of Chopin Etudes.

One of my favorites: No. 42, after Op. 25-11 (Winter Wind)

or bad video quality, but actual video

Indeed - as already indicated in no small detail in another recent thread about left hand issues.

For other left hand pieces, here is Moszkowski's etude op. 92 no. 12, written specifically for just the left hand.

I suppose Scriabin's Nocturne for left hand would also be fun to play.

Indeed so - but as I'm now almost getting tired of saying - Godowsky, Godowsky, Godowsky! The Master of the Sinister!...

You need to sort out your spacing here - it looks very confusing! That said, there's certainly some useful and intersing material here - and, while we're about it, don't let's forget the Wittgenstein arrangement for left hand of a certain transcription of certain music from Tristan und Isolde!...

Personally, I think the Prelude is much more challenging. Its your choice which one you learn, but  if I were you, I would learn the Prelude just because it is a lot more difficult and I enjoy listening to it more.

i'm not sure why it auto formated it like that i copied pasted from my list and on my end it didn't do that just in the pianostreet reply. i'll try and modify manually here in a sec thanks for lettng me know!

There are now at least two threads devoted to what Ives would have called "southpaw pitching"; perhaps they should be united (if not defeated!)...

Alistair

Hello Scherzo123! I recently discovered a youtube channel where they talk extensively about a technique called symmetrical inversions, it is a very powerful technique to develop the equity of both hands, especially the left hand, in my opinion the technique is phenomenal because you can mirror what the right hand does but in reverse taking any passage you are interested in from any piece of music and using the same fingering as the right hand. These guys created a whole library of scores written specially backwards and a software to connect digital pianos to the computer and invert the keyboard so that the symmetrical inversions sound good (I have even seen that they have available all the Rachmaninoff preludes and all the Chopin etudes in symmetrical inversion, it's amazing hahaha). They had a brilliant idea without a doubt. Personally, I have been studying symmetrical inversions for two years now and they have greatly strengthened my left hand technique. I leave you the link in case you want to see what it is all about:

Another suggestion I can give you are the preludes of Blanchet's Op.41, there are four books in total, the fourth book is dedicated only to the left hand, in my opinion they are fascinating exercises that will make you sweat your left hand and get muscles out of it. Blanchet was a phenomenal pianist, it is a pity that his pedagogical and compositional work is still not so well known. Good luck in your practice!
