the lovely C# from the first book, which has always been one of my favorites.  i admit to abusing the prelude by playing it too fast but at this point in time i find it irresistible to do so.

a long time ago i imagined each of the preludes and fugues of the wtc as representing some beast or insect. the prelude, in my imagination, was a physical description of the thing in life, and the fugue was the inner workings, the soul or mind if you will. i don't remember what i came up with for all of them, but this one was the Hummingbird. those tremolos and little winding scales are the hummingbird zipping about; the pedal point syncopated passages at the end are a bit of hovering.

the fugue, with its widely spaced and light-hearted character represented the essential good humor of the hummingbird, and the wide leaps suggested that as much space existed in the heart of the hummingbird as they had to travel in outside.  fanciful i know! but it was how i used to think.
