Education class from September
on: July 22, 2012, 03:40:45 PM
Hi,
I will begin my minor in education next semester.
They will probably be beginners, and they will probably be young.
So I wont have time to do anything else than a tiny bit of sight reading, and maybe quick harmony about the pieces, but the rest have to be the playing itself.
Does anyone here have the experience in "making up" for the short lesson, by sort or online complement?
I was thinking to have some video tutorials about harmony, ear training and sight reading, and I'll also add some easy exercises that wont take more than 20 minutes.
I was also thinking to have some short "How to practice"-texts or videos.
Does it seem like a good idea?

Maybe some directions to websites? It's all out there.

What do you mean?
Obviously, I haven't made it yet. Cause I don't want to spend loads of time on something (If I will do it, it will be of standard, not just any lame tutorial/blog-site) if it's a bad idea.
I will, of course, give the website to my students, and everybody who wants it... but, as I said, I haven't made it yet.
But here's what I'm thinking:
Since they are beginners, I would want to "be there" for them as much as I can. Now, since I am a student myself, I will only have the schedule the school gives us.
The most would be that they also get private lessons, but that would still mean that they are alone 5 days a week. But if I can have some basic stuff online, and also advice on how to practice, both the pieces they are practicing, but also general practice, I think it would make everything easier. Instead of them coming every lesson, asking "Hi, I have trouble with this, how can I do it?" I can first show them in class, post a video of it on the website, and send it to them. In that way, the risk that they forget is much smaller.
I also think that the lessons will be way to short to do the actual playing along with ear training, harmony and sight reading. So instead of wasting time on that in class, I can make a video on the website.
Anyone follow, or is it waaay too ambitious?

A smart teacher never creates a resource if one is already out there. I meant direct them to material you judge worthwhile. Playalong stuff is excellent.

Ah, you mean like that... Yeah, maybe that's a good idea. I was just thinking that it's more fun with a familiar face, and I might know their "language" so that I use words they know.. But yeah, you're right. I'm waiting for an answer from my teacher, but now I know what she might say. Thanks
