Bach Bb major partita practice questions!
on: August 11, 2012, 07:56:29 PM
Hey all,
I'm working through my rep for this year, working out the kinks in some of the pieces. Getting notes down, seeking out the hard parts, developing practice methods.
One thing I've always had to 'wing it' for is baroque music...
I need help for a practice routine for the Bach.
I've played Bach every year for the last six or seven years, and each time I've learned the piece the same way. Sight read, keep repeating over and over until it's down.
The majority of the partita is sight readable, so I'm having issues 'isolating' spots to really sit and work at - I get antsy!
I was working through a Chopin and Liszt etude today, and they have concretely 'difficult' sections that I find REQUIRE total focus. I switch to the Prelude from the Partita, and I need a different way to work at it than taking 4 bars and repeating slowly/rhythmically/hands separate.
How do you guys keep Bach INTERESTING to practice? I love the Partita, and Bach's music is incredible, but it's extremely daunting to actually work at. There are rarely any technical spots that I have to solve like a puzzle, and the voicing is pretty damn straightforward (I've done a handful of preludes and fugues; the contrapuntal writing doesn't scare me any more haha)
------------
I'm slightly worried, because my prof is going to know in September that I neglected this piece
; he keeps saying that a movement of the Partita (or any piece by Bach for that matter) can be learned concisely in a short period of time, as long as I stay on topic while practicing it... I just need more than that though...
Anyone who has learned this piece for university/recital or whichever... enlighten me! What are your secrets for practicing Bach with as much enthusiasm as the Winterwind, or the Apassionata?!
Thanks!
