on: October 24, 2012, 08:50:52 AM
i just realized that my 4th finger of my right hand got some problem.
i was hitting the wall and caused damage to my right hand.
is there any chance that i could be a good pianist with this condition ?
is there any exercise to make my 4th finger get even better ?

Hello (I think I've welcomed you in another thread!... :P)

By the way, is your finger problem really serious? I mean, what's the problem exactly?
If your injury was so serious (has caused damage on your finger) and your playing has been greatly affected by it, then this will possibly make it more difficult (even impossible) for you to play technically demanding pieces later.

Don't start playing hard (for your level of course) pieces without warming-up before in order to help your hand adjust to practice normally. To make your finger get better (if the problem is), I think you should try some finger exercises and studies, such as Hanon, scales, Czerny, etc.. (There are some examples below.) If you feel pain during your practice, have a break for a few minutes. It's important to let your hand relax in order to avoid overstrain.

Don't give up. Keep on practicing being patient, consistent and insistent. But, don't overdo it!

no, not a serious injury.

 :) That's nice!

what song should i learn?

I'm not really sure... :-\ Could you tell me what your level is? You know... what pieces you can play and other things like that. ::)

I also posted some interesting exercises of Isidor Philipp and "Les Cinq Doigts (The Five Fingers)" of Carl Czerny.

I'll be annoying (again)!...
Would you like to play classical repertoire or other pieces (contemporary, popular songs, etc.)?
I'm asking you in order to make specific suggestions.

Some ideas:

Yiruma - River Flows in You

Chopin - Prelude Op.28 No.4
[ Invalid YouTube link ]w

Chopin - Prelude Op.28 No.15 "Raindrop"

Chopin - Mazurka Op.67 No.2

Chopin - Waltz in A Minor Op. posthumous

Satie - Gnossiennes No.1, 2, 3 & 4

Michael Nyman - The Heart Asks for Pleasure First

Burgmuller - 25 Easy and Progressive Etudes

Not necessarily. Maybe learn them in order of difficulty. I can't help you with that since I only played Raindrop prelude. Sorry.

As pianoplayjl said, not necessarily. They are not in order of difficulty, but most of them are almost the same difficult. I would order them like this:
- Burgmuller 25 Easy and Progressive Studies (Here there is a problem, because it contains studies of progressive difficulty. The first studies are easier than the last ones. I advice you to start with the first pieces and then go on with the others.)
- Chopin - Prelude Op.28 No.4 (Although it's easy to read and play the notes, it's difficult musically. But it's worth trying.)
- Eric Satie - Gnossiennes 1,2,3,4
- Chopin - Waltz Op. posthumous in A Minor (Left hand must be familiar with big "jumps", but this piece is good practice.)
- Yiruma - River flows in you
- Michael Nyman - The heart asks pleasure first (You have to synchronize your hands as they play 16ths at the same time.)
- Chopin - Prelude Op.28 No.15
- Chopin - Mazurka Op.67 No.2 (And in this mazurka, there are big jumps on the left hand.)
But the order is subjective. You may find some of them easier than I do, and vice versa.

However, you can choose the pieces you like most. I believe that the most important thing is to enjoy whatever you play!

Here it is!

If you need any advice about how to play the piece, feel free to ask. This is an urtext edition, which means that ''it is a printed version intended to reproduce the original intention of the composer as exactly as possible, without any added or changed material"*. So, this is the reason why there aren't any dynamics or expression markings on the sheet music, apart from those written by the composer.

Actually, I can't think of any specific studies or exercises which can prove beneficial.
I'm not sure what kind of pieces you'd like to play before the waltz? If you want something that can help you to play the piece, then I can recommend you some practice tips:

The main difficulties of the piece are the big jumps that the left hand has to play and a fast arpeggio passage (mi-sol#-si...) on the right hand.
Firstly, you can practice the jumps in a slow tempo (not the whole piece, but each bar alone) in order to help your hand learn the distances that it has to cross.

I'm sorry but I don't have enough time to give you further instructions. The only thing that I can say is: Practice slowly being careful to play the correct notes and play forte. After you have learned the whole piece very well, you can play the piece in a faster tempo and add dynamics.

I also found this thread which contains analytical instructions about the jumps in this waltz:

I'll be back later!
