I wonder sometimes if I've been "tainted" by classical music, especially the romantic era. I can listen to Ries, Raff, Rachmaninov, Rubinstein and Rossini all day. Put on some Messianen, Stockhausen, Schnittke, Schoenberg, Webern or Babbitt and I'm ready to climb the walls. To be fair, I like the early works of Alban Berg, especially the Fruhe Klaviermusik from 1907-09 and also some of his earlier orchestral bits. I read somewhere that, around the 60's or 70's. modern day composers eschewed 20th century modernism in favor of neoclassicism. Maybe the backlash has started. Can't say I disagree!
