sight reading book suggestions
on: January 31, 2013, 12:38:28 PM
Hello,
Does anyone have any suggestions on books that I can sight read from? Please don't suggest the instruction books, because I already have the basics down, I just want to improve. I am looking more for those books that have a collection of pieces by a composer, but the easier ones for now. Not like any Chopin.  :)

Since you say you have the basics down, I would suggest as a first step:
For the right hand only: violin literature
For the left hand only: cello literature
This teaches you horizontal thinking.
P.S.: Of course, strictly implementing the basics you have already down.

I have done things like that in the past, should I still be doing those while I continue my sight reading? What I mean is, right now I am sight reading sheet music similar to the album for the young. Should I practice horizontal thinking to improve my level?

Well, I said "as a first step". Since you've already done that, the logical choice would be classical sonatinas and sonatas of your choice. And lots of Bach, of course, because his music usually has a steady beat.

Basic scarlatti sonatas, easy mozart, clementi. Grade 5 rep should be a little hard but good practice. Just get books that have collections of rep but divided by piano grades.

Depends what level you are reading at right now. The Four Star series goes up to level 8, and it's great for sight-reading.

The Four Star series is perfect for you then. You should use those.
