How to quickly correct mistakes I've been having for a long time?
on: February 05, 2013, 03:18:47 AM
Hey all
I have been playing piano for around 3-4 years and in all the songs that I've played and all 6 and a half songs I have memorized currently, there are always these little spots that I have some trouble with.
I sometimes manage to clean it up, and then some time later new places that I previously played flawlessly start to trouble me. Why is it that I am just getting trouble in places that weren't hard to begin with?
Also, in the time that I've been playing, I've been trying to clean up certain hard areas of my pieces simply with long repetition and at some points I do it good and at other points the mistakes just come back to haunt me again with difficulty and frustration. Why is it that sometimes I do good on some parts, and then it just reverts to being very difficult again? Is there a different way to get rid of mistakes more PERMANENTLY, instead of being good at it and then later on (could be hours, days, or weeks later on) not doing good again? Because, this slow, long, repetition-type playing kinda sorta usually works for a little, but it is so frustrating when I come back to it and then I suck at it.

Practise the part you make mistakes on slowly and completely relaxed, making sure you're paying attention to the fact that this is what you're supposed to be playing, not just switching off and practising it mechanically.
Also when you play it at tempo, you'll probably be nervous about making the mistake, that's probably the biggest cause to be honest. I suppose that's the biggest barrier really, but once you've got that assurance don't lose it if you slip up once or twice, everyone slips on a bad day, wrong notes are a part of the process, don't let it eat at you because then it will happen again and again and could affect you in other passages.
Well, this is how I go about it.
Seems to work okay.

Find the cause of the mistake, underlying weaknesses, what strengths or things you don't know or skills you don't have that you have to get which this implies. Then find out what you have to do to get there, and do it.
