Any sad/emotional baroque pieces to suggest?
on: April 23, 2013, 04:18:14 PM
I'm currently learning Chopin's Waltz in B minor, op.69 no.2. Afterwards my teacher wants me to come up with a piece from either Baroque or Classical period. I'd really appreciate if you could suggest any emotional/sad pieces, such as Bach's Siciliano? Thanks!

-Händel's menuet in G minor, Kempff transcription.
-Bach's prelude and fugue in C# minor from wtc1.
-Händel's sarabande in D minor.

I think Sarabande is the most suitable piece for your level now. :)

Since I've already played sarabande in D minor I'll start searching for the transcription of menuet in G minor, absolutely loved that piece, exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a lot!  :) Any more suggestions?

Although people tend to perform his more flashy pieces, there are a whole bunch of sad/melancholy sonatas by Scarlatti. He was also a master of shifting the mood during  a short 4 page sonata. His sonatas are mostly not too difficult, so just start digging. Here are a few suggestions:
K58 (a fugue to keep Jmenz happy)
K81 or K87
K197
K232
K402 (a bit long but a good example of the way he could vary the athmosphere within a piece)
K462
K481

One of only five he wrote (or at least which have survived) for keyboard. Given his prodigious output, I fear my happiness wasn't high on his list of priorities.  :(

I didn't say my happiness shouldn't have been foremost in his mind. I'm laying any blame squarely on him.  He was even good at writing them!

But the guy was a genious, so I am sure he could predict that there would be an Aussie guy who'd want to play fugues one day...did Australia exist back then?

Bach Sinfonia 9 in F minor
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
