I'm learning how to play the keyboard
on: May 24, 2013, 03:00:13 PM
Hey,

After having played the violin and cello for 7 years (since I was 10), I recently picked up the keyboard. I'm completely self taught and no one in my family are musical so I'd like to post some little performances I've been working on here so you can comment on them. The goal is to elicit constructive criticism from you so I can of course, improve.  Please bare in mind that I'm a novice on the keyboard having played it for only 6 months now. The piano in the recording is also out of tune but I hope you can hear past that (It's the only keyboard I have). My goal is to pick up any piece of music and be able to play it instantaneously - though isn't that the goal for any musician? The pieces here aren't played perfectly, which is why I'm here for help (I have no keyboard teacher at all).

Thanks.

You will get more reaction and comments if you posted this in the Student and/or Auditions forums.
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

Self-teaching piano is one of the worst ideas one can have, in my humble opinion.

You are talented but I see (or heard) that there are many basic things on your playing that can only corrected by a teacher, and it's not the out of tune piano's fault. I also couldn't see how do you play so we can say nothing about technique, hand and body position... everything fundamental aspects of a good and safe playing without the risk of injuries. A (good) teacher knows also which are the pieces you need to play at this moment in order to learn and grow your pianism. My general advice would be: don't trow away your talent teaching yourself (or do it if that is your wish).

Giving a concrete advice, he first thing you may correct is the numerous reading errors you have. Please, reread the score slowly.

P.S. I sum to hfmadopter advice. You should move this thread to student's / audition. As the heading of this sub forum tells:
