I totally agree.

But let us not forget Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira).

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

No, it's horror; quite good, although it's an older anime.

You mean Slayers and Escaflowne?

I got hooked when I was a kid in Germany - watching the few offered episodes of Sailor Moon (I know, I know! lol.. but the mangas were wonderfully drawn! Though the story line is a bit "o_O" sometimes, Naoko Takeuchi could draw very well (not considering the initial intention for the series..)), animated versions of Little Women (one of my favorites lol), and bunch of others like Georgie, Lady Oscar, and many others..

now, I watch less though, unfortunately.. :/

my friend's really into Fruits Basket now - she's got DVDs.. watched a few episodes with her, hehe

I'm a big fan of Neon Genesis Evangelion, the movies Death & Rebirth and End Of Evangelion gave me strange nightmares of that huge Rei spillin her guts on Earth. Huge fan of Miyazaki's work too, favorite movie of his is Spirited Away. Umm, Lupin the 3rd is hilarious, and I just got into the series Peacemaker!

Love anime and Japanese shows in general.  Studied Japanese for more than a few years, and anime is a great way to learn.  Heck, television is a great way to learn any foreign language - but you do have to do some work.  Also great for when you're tired as anything but still want to learn.  Some of those older movies by Akira Kurosawa are impossible to interpret since they use the older, traditional form of Japanese with a lot of polite forms (you really need the subtitles).  Trigun is a favorite of mine - I think it's better than Cowboy Bebop, IMO.  Waiting for counterargument by anime fan.... :)

has anyone seen any of the series 'Yakitate!! Japan'? i wathed the first couple of episodes recently, and HIGHLY recommend it. it's basically about bread making - and if that doesn't get you excited enough - they make the task of making bread absurdly hilarious (i <3 japan). it really made me want to make bread, too. kinda inspiring.

I think you people would love boxtorrents.com .

Anyways, I personally like Trigun as my favorite Anime (and possibly favorite TV Show, ever) , along with Azumanga Daioh, Cowboy Bebop, and several others. My mind is foggy when it comes to this stuff. I've been currently watching the Chobits series out of curiosity. It's pretty good, to be honest.

I have just been to our local “art” movie theatre where they are showing a retrospective of Myazaki’s Studio Ghibli movies as a starter for the forthcoming “Howl’s Moving Castle” which will open here on the 30th September.

Todays’ treat was “Whisper of the heart”, which I had not heard of before, so I went not quite knowing what to expect. What a wonderful surprise. This was one of the most moving, magical movies (note, not just anime) I have ever seen.

Nothing much happens in it. The plot revolves about a 15 year old girl, Shizuko, who loves books (her father works at the local library) and she realises that all the books she borrows have been borrowed previously by one Seiji. One day, she follows a fat cat to an old shop full of weird bric-a-brac and become friends with the old man who owns the shop.  His grandson turns out to be Seiji, who is about to go to Italy to study violin making. A tentative relationship develops and while he is gone for two months to Italy as preparation for his future studies, she decides to write a novel (which intrudes here and there in the movie). Not only a film about first love, but also about finding oneself and one’s place in the world.

The script (written by Myazaki – but the movie is directed by ) is simply superb. The ever present danger in this subject is a quick slide into cheap sentimentality, a trap in which it never ever falls. Instead, the characters are thoroughly and most satisfactorily developed, and as usual in Myazaki’s movies, there is plenty of comedy moments.

But what I found truly outstanding was the animation (and direction). The level of attention to detail is simply mind boggling (e.g., when shizuko is in the train, you can see the cityscape reflected on the train windows) so much so, that for most of the movie, I simply forgot that I was watching a cartoon.

A truly magical movie (warning: not for the cynical or hard of heart), that one would wish to go on and on (a comment I heard about “Howl’s moving castle” which I am waiting for in great anticipation :D).

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Last week I went to see Myiazaki’s latest, the truly wonderful “Howl’s Moving Castle”. Myiazaki just gets better and better. Many of his lifelong motifs turn up in hits movie: weird aerial machines, magic, human flight, the absence of a true villain, and an a powerful anti-war statement (as Wizard Howl prepares to destroy a flying war machine, Sophie asks him: “Is it one of ours?” and he replies with utter contempt: “What difference does it make?”) Superb!

The story concerns a shy and self effacing hat maker, Sophie Hatter, who lives in a town where war preparations are taking place: Tanks roll the streets, military parades go by under the cheering of the population. The new gossip is that a moving castle has been wandering in the outskirts of the town. The castle belongs to a powerful magician, Howl, who is reputed to kidnap pretty ladies and eat their hearts.

Sophie goes to town to visit her mother who works in a bakery, and while on a side street is harassed by two soldiers. A handsome stranger rescues her, but then they are both pursued by dark creatures. Suddenly the stranger holds her and both fly into space. Sophie is literally swept off her feet. Later, for reasons that will become clear later, she meets the Witch of the Waste who curses her, and transforms her in to a 90 year old woman – part of the curse is that she cannot tell anyone about it. Ashamed of her new appearance, she decides to run away and goes to the Waste to find someone who can break her curse. Eventually she comes across Howl’s moving castle and becomes the house keeper. Howl is of course, the handsome stranger who saved her in the town. She does not reveal to him who she really is and goes about cleaning the castle and cooking.

In the castle, besides Howl lives his apprentice Markl, and a fire demon, calcifer who is responsible for the castle movement, and who is under Howl’s power due to some sort of arrangement he cannot talk about (just as Sophie cannot talk about her curse). Calcifer says to Sophie that he has the power to free her, but in return she must spy on Howl and find out how to break his arrangement with the wizard.

And this is just the first ten minutes! For the next two hours, an excellent script with plenty of twists and thrilling moments kept me at the edge of the seat. The animation needless to say is short of miraculous, to the point where you simply forget you are actually watching a cartoon.

Don’t miss it, arguably Myazaki’s best to date. :D

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Spirited away was the best movie I've ever seen in terms of fascination factor, the characters, story ,anime, everything, was absolutely mind blowing.

Yes, Spirited away is another Myiazaki classic.

I have just got the DVD for one of Myiazaki’s first (or perhaps second) animes: “Nausica of the Valley of the Winds”. I was not expecting too much: the critic I had read compared it with the later “Princess Mononoke” – which is one of my least favourites Myazaki animes. I like it all right, but it is not one of my favourites. I was in for a big shock. “Nausica” is simply stupendous.

As always the level of animation is spellbounding. And then the complex script and the peerless direction keep you firmly glued to your seat in spite of the very long time (over 2 hours), and wishing it would go on forever.

The story takes place in the future. After some pretty disastrous war (possibly nuclear) the whole planet is infested with a toxic, highly poisonous jungle populated by huge, aggressive insects. Nausica is the princess of the Valley of the winds, a place near the sea, where thanks to the winds that come from the ocean and blow the seeds/spores of the toxic jungle away is an ecological oasis in a pretty much uninhabitable world. But the peace of the valley of the winds is about to be broken: Two warring kingdoms are about to invade the Valley.

Many later preoccupations of Myazaki are here: Strange flying machines, the sheer stupidity of the military, the greed and lack of vision of the politicians/elite, and yet no black and white characters (a real problem with Disney, for instance).

Highly recommended. :D

By the way, anyone has seen “Porco Rosso”? (It will be distributed in DVD in November over here).

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Awesome, thanks bernhard,I'm gonna go searching for Myiazaki titles, a name unheard of to me until now. We dont hear of a lot of things all the way down here :).

I first came across anime many years ago when I went to a midnight session on the local art hourse cinema. The anime was "Akira". Oh boy, that was some experience. I had never seen that sort of detailed backgrounds and extreme attention to details. And the script was excellent. I still think of Akira as unsurpassed. I started then looking for similar stuff but at the time it was pretty much impossible to come by. (Akira, by the way is not by Myiazaki).

My first anime by Myiazaki was the amazing "Laputa: Castle in the Sky". Although not as heavy in the storyline (Akira is definitely not for children), it shared the same amazing animation quality and complex plot. You just could not predict what was coming next.

It is only now that they are starting to release this stuff in the UK (Apparently Disney took over distribution).

Have fun!

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

omigosh deffo!! I love Miyazaki! Though knowledge on others is kinda limited. My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away and Howl's moving castle are all really good...though the version of HMC i saw was in chinese not english which I think spoilt it a bit...

I'm also a massive Hisaishi fan (music to Studio Ghibli films) :D

Anime > All

The entire reason I started Piano was because of a group called The Spoony Bards who play nothing but Final Fantasy, RPG, and anime theme songs at Anime Conventions near where I live.

I started piano thanks to the wonderous Yoshiki Hayashibara from simply the most astonished Symphonic Rock Band: X Japan. That fascination ultimately stems back to Anime and it's music.

I used to be quite a fan of Anime, except in a small generalised way, I didn't watch LOADS of Anime's, and never really digged Conventions and stuff. Keep myself to myself regarding Anime when really dealing in it, almost a personal side of me O_o

You will all think I'm a noob, but hands down my all time favourite Anime is Digimon Tamers, closely followed by Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Kanon.

I'm sure I seen someone else around here who hails the Glories of X Japan...
