Practicing with only one hand
on: December 22, 2013, 09:16:35 PM
My right hand has been injured, and I've been practicing for the first time in my life with only one hand. It's a bit weird and I feel lost sometimes as to what do next. I've done plenty of technical exercises, and practiced a bit of the left hand part of my repertoire. The thing is, I feel so different and "unbalanced" practicing this way I don't know if it's any good.

TLDR how would you practice the piano if you injured one of your hands?
Chopin First Scherzo
Guarnieri Ponteios
Ravel Sonatine
Rachmaninoff Prelude op. 32 no. 10
Schumann Kinderszenen
Debussy Brouillards
Bach, Bach, Bach...

Strangely, when I injured my right hand, in the end it improved my overall mechanical facility as it allowed my left hand to "catch up".

If you feel unbalanced, try shifting yourself to the right on your piano stool.

Learn some left-hand repertoire! I play left hand stuff for fun, sometimes I hope one day to injure my RH so it makes more sense.
I'm not sure what to suggest immediately, but I've had fun with this book-

Injuring my right hand was the greatest thing that ever happened to me as a pianist!

For two months, I practiced improvising with the LH alone. I practiced all of my repertoire LH alone.

The best way to practice LH alone is to sing the RH melody with your voice, with your RH relaxed by your side!
