Fast track to ABRSM 8
on: January 14, 2014, 11:52:03 AM
Hi guys,

I am currently in lv 6 ABRSM. (I started piano 3 years ago) I want to finish my next ABRSM 8 exam within a year. I would appreciate any tips or guides you can give me to achieve this level. What I am worst at is sight reading, and stable rhythm. I have been practicing sight reading for about a month now and it's gotten slightly better. I can read level 8 pieces and play them very very very very slowly. If you can direct me to some pieces and sonatinas, that i can work on, to enhance my piano skills i would greatly appreciate that.

thank you so much

If you have to cut corners you might want to avoid works graded at 8 by the ABRSM, but graded at higher levels in other syllabuses.  Looking at the pianosyllabus.com site I see for example that Bach's Prelude and Fugue in A major BWV 888 is graded 8, but is also graded 9 or 10 in other syllabuses.  Similarly with Chopin's Waltz in F major Op 34/3.  On the flipside, the 3rd movement of Beethoven's Sonata Op 13 is graded 7 in a number of other syllabuses.  I know these things are highly subjective but it might help your thinking re what to work on.

Thank you so much Ian. Yeah, these pieces are little advanced for me. But I will work on them. I have trouble connecting with Bach, but Chopin and Beethoven are fine with me. Thanks again ^^
