Did you know?

1. At the age of six Liszt received piano lessons from his father, who was a Hungarian, occupying an official position on the estates of Prince Esterhazy. His mother was of Austrian birth.
2. As a boy, Liszt went to Vienna accompanied by his  father, where he studied the piano with Carl Czerny and composition with Salieri.
3. In’ 1823 Liszt went to Paris, hoping to secure admission to the Conservatory but Cherubini refused it because of his foreign origin, even though Cherubini himself was a foreigner.

...I thought I would share these fun facts about Liszt's early musical training...

lolllll this is amazing!!!!!!!!!    You really nailed the snappy attitude of this piece.  I looooved how absolutely feisty it is.  This is a prime example (from some other thread somewhere) about how a performance needs to be given 100% your all, and not hold back on anything.  If you would have been more careful and hit all the right notes, but sacrificed the musicality, it would not have had the punch or the life that it does have.  I fully support the "give'er" approach.  Way to lay it all out on the line.  It was outstanding!!!!  The ending segment may have been a tad bit intense.  But who cares?  It spoke to the audience.  and it was pretty damn impressive.

Sorry guys, i know all the your replies are very positive (maybe because its an attractive girl), but...

May i notice that you're playing it quite faster than you -seem- technically able at the moment? I dont mind a few mistakes, but this piece does not really sound 'performance-ready' at this speed for you, since you're missing just too many notes here.

Btw, i'm being a bit directer here, but you're obviously a good pianist and you know what you're doing.

Sit higher, you'll get better leverage.  That's a helluva lot of anger into those keys.  Lots of strength went into that which doesn't look good.

Interesting.  Someone who can play such a demanding piece to this level would surely know when it should be ready for performance.  The slips were not the inevitable type that you would typically see and accept as part of a live performance.  Nor do they seem to have arisen from nerves or lapse of concentration.  On the contrary, she had a confident concert demeanour.  The mistakes were more likely a result of a lack of preparation.

This makes it all the more puzzling why she would put the video and ask for our comments.  She is definitely good enough to not need us remind her of where it went wrong.  She is definitely good enough to know that it was not a finished product.
Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3

Hola Beatriz,

I'm not an active listener yet, so I can't comment on the technicalities, but I've gone to a few recitals where this piece has been played, by some established artists (Lang Lang, Trifonov, among others), and some upcoming pianists (recent graduates on church concerts).

My preferred interpretation was the one from Daniil Trifonov on his London concert, after winning the Tchaikovsky competition. Really, really great.

As I said before, I liked your interpretation. Although it's difficult to appreciate it fully on a video.

Saludos,
Abie.

Hola Abie,

You are absolutely right about watching a performance on a video as supposed to watching it live in the real presence of the artist. Back in 1996, I had the opportunity to watch Radu Lupu live in Vancouver. What a beautiful experience that was: the atmosphere, the reaction of the audience, the complete silence in the hall when he played softly!! A very special moment!!! I've seen him on video and it's not anywhere close as wonderful as what I experienced in the live concert.

Muchas gracias, Abie!!!

Saludos de verano,

Beatriz

You are miles above my own abilities, but I have to say that there were quite a few wrong notes in that. you have the speed and the agility to totally nail that piece, but it just didnt happen.

My heart was warmed when reading your thread about performing lesser known composers as this is very dear to me, but in the nicest possible way, you should leave this piece well alone and stick to works that are within your capabilities.

I am going to be as gentle as possible as you are probably a lovely young lady, but you are about as close to performing this to an acceptable standard as de Pachmann was to the Chopin-Godowsky Revolutionary. Your tempo is all over the place, you could fill up bathtub with all the wrong notes and you attempt to cover up an almost nervous breakdown with your foot glued to the pedal. I have no idea why you would release such a performance.

I have to accept the possibility that I am a complete arse and this is a performance of genius. However, it did not sound any more palatable to my ears even after half a gallon of ale and most things do.

+1.....  however... I don't agree with the final paragraph, and I don't think Thal needs to accept said possibility.

In my opinion, Beatriz has considerable work to do upon her techniques of touch and pedaling!

I can accept the front part though excessive pedalling, for the ending however, ignoring the wrong notes, the pedalling is too much and it ruined it all. Sorry for being negative.
