“The Sound Always Comes First” — Andrea Bonatta on Teaching Liszt

Why tone matters more than speed, why reading Goethe matters as much as practising octaves, and how a single insight can transform a performance. Italian pianist and scholar Andrea Bonatta has spent decades exploring the contradictions of Franz Liszt, from performer to man of faith, virtuoso to poet. Here, in conversation with Piano Street at Liszt Utrecht 2026, he shares his vision. Read more

Schubert Impromptu A-Flat 90/4 (partial)
on: May 28, 2014, 12:47:10 AM
Hey, sorry I didn't include the first part, I was playing this at a rehearsal and my teacher said to start at the B section to save time. Also didn't take the second repeat  :-[ Anyway, please give feedback!

I didn't set up my audio recording device in the best spot, but I hope it's not too bad

Edit: I mispelled Schubert in the filename, silly German and its trigraphs

Thanks! I had to learn and memorize this piece pretty fast since it was a last second decision to play it at my junior recital.  :)

The repeated chords aren't voiced properly; there is a single note that is too pronounced that it grounds the chord.  This attracts the attention away from the melody.

About the melody, resolutions need to be softer:
Tension > resolution
RE > do
Dominant > tonic

Thanks for the tips!

Are you saying that I'm voicing one note too much or that I should voice it more? Sorry, it was a little ambiguous to me. And with the repeated chords, do you mean in the B section (that I started with in the recording)?

There's one note that sticks out noticeably from the others so it needs to be uniform with the rest of the chord.  Yes, with the B section.  Do you hear what I'm referring to?  It's the E right under the melody.
