weird/strange pieces.
on: July 06, 2014, 03:08:47 PM
Im sure somewhere on the internet this topic has already been covered but I have been searching for days and I can't seem to find anything.

So Im looking for weird/strange/creepy music. Not 12 tone stuff. Just music thats different.

So far on my list that i've compiled is:
Prokofiev fugitive visions 1 and 2
Liszt Hungarian rhapsody 17
       s208
Satie gnossienne

I know theres a lot out there thats very fast paced, but I'm looking for something slower with a strong melody.

Nocturne op. 9 no. 2

Is Chopin the only composer you equate with Voldemort?

Other suggestions:

Tausig's Ghostship

Smetana's Macbeth and the Witches

Dvořák's Na starém hradě

You might think this is twelve tone, but you'd be wrong - let it grow on you:

This kind of a piece is hard on the ears yet seemingly would connect with the past.

For a long while, these have felt weird to me:

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

this is a strange and eerie work. title suggests sacred or spiritual/religious, but the sound is decidedly sinister.

PS and a cool one not too unlike some Prokofiev...

Scriabin did acknowledge his affinity for writing weird music.  The title is quite descriptive.

Hmmm.

Try the following  ;D

Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No. 3
Liszt Funeral Prelude & Funeral March
Liszt La Lugubre Gondola No. 1 &2
Liszt Schlaflos! Frage und Antwort
Liszt Unstern! Sinistre, Disastro
Debussy: Élégie (1915)
Ravel Le Gibet

... Scriabin.... That's all  :P

Satie Vexations
Bartok - Three Etudes op. 18
And I am surprised no one brought up Ligeti - Requiem (1965) and
György Ligeti: Lux Aeterna.

I am now listening to Penderecki: "Dimensions of Time and Silence" and this probably wins the creepiest music.

Currently studying:

Beethoven Sonata No.20
Brahms Waltz in D Minor
Brahms Waltz in A Flat Major
Scriabin Preludes Op.22 No.1 & No.2
Scriabin Prelude Op.56 No.3
Scriabin Prelude Op. 51, No. 2

If orchestral music is included, nothing can beat Xenaxis' Metastasis.
