Your favorite Chopin Etude?

Etudes of Chopin are generally beautiful pieces- what's your favorite?
Mine has to be 10/11. Very underrated, and very beautiful.

And what part of "Chopin Etude" did you not understand?  ::)

I think he meant Chopin's Neighbours', for Chopin is too commonplace. I understand the op very well.

But for the extraneous apostrophe, you deserve to be right.

Op. 25/7, nicknamed "Cello".

P.S.: IMHO, the transcription for cello with piano accompaniment is also worth listening to:

Listening to things like this just make me jealous of string players  >:( .  They can do so much more with a melody...

Favorite etude for me would be op25 no5 ("wrong note").

Doesn't immediately come most folks mind but it's an étude and the material is chopin ( mostly)
 :)
Love this thing!

Honorable mention the Carlos Chavez inversion of op 10 no 1 ( rh and lh are flip flopped ) 8)

One suspects the bit that's not "mostly" appeals to you most.  ;D

My favorite is Etude op. 25 no. 7 in C sharp minor. It's a slow one, so people usually don't play it. Another one I like very much is Etude op. 10 No. 6 in e flat minor.

Good choices! I must say, every Chopin Etude is very close to my heart! I think two of the most beautiful ones, however, are two of the LEAST often played-numbers 2 and 3 of the Trois Nouvelle Etudes     :)

I am partial to TNE #1 in F minor, a short study of continuous 3 against 4.  Very haunting, almost bluesy, and once the cross rhythm is secure, quite fun to play.

I know it well! It is indeed haunting!

Honestly, I think ALL of Chopin's Etudes are more or less equally musical. It's almost unreasonable to declare a favourite!

For those that love TNE #2, have you heard the Godowsky transcription of it?

It's one of his few studies, that I think is just as good, musically in its own.  Both Hamelin and Robert Helps have excellent interpretations of the piece.

Honestly the body of etudes as a whole is an immense masterpiece. The goal, the artistry and body of knowledge to accomplish this result is out of this world.

If you have to pick one, I think Op. 10 nr 3 is an honorable mention because of one of the best melodies ever written and this in an etude. Also Op. 25/11 and Op. 25/12 are artistically of an incredible standard and with my limited knowledge it seems to me that the effects and atmosphere created with this pieces were at the time completely new and there was nothing that came even close to this.

Have you guys watched Impromptu with Hugh Grant?  ;D  I really liked the way they used 25/9 in the movie.  Since I like all Chopin etudes, I just thought to highlight one others may not mention. The piece is awful to play with small hands.

My favorites would be:
      10/1
      25/6
      25/5

There are so many other etudes I would put on this list because there is such variety in them, but these stand out the most for me.
Repertoire

Beethoven Sonata Op.2 No.3
Bach Prelude and Fugue No.5 WTC 1
Prokofiev Vision Fugitives No.7
Rachmaninoff Prelude Op.23 No.5

I also agree, the etudes have many different qualities and personalities that changes one's view about an étude over another.

Well the most fun to play, to practice, and to hear is different for me. I absolutely love practicing Op.10 No.2 because of the feeling of the 4th/5th fingers moving like that just is so cool! I hated practicing Op.10 No.1 because most of the time I was just practicing awkward fingering arpeggios over and over (since the easier arpeggios happen to be a lot easier for me then the harder ones). However, I love playing it now that I've got it down. Maybe it's just the fact that I got to see all the hard work finally produce something (but I've played several other etudes before so I don't think that's the case). As for hearing, for me the best are Op.25 No.7 ->so sad and beautiful, and Op.10 No.10 -> so happy and beautiful. When I was in high school I used to like the fiery/stormy ones (Op.25 No.10 > Op.25 No.11 > Op.10 No.12 > Op.10 No.4 > Op.25 No.12) but now I've gotten to appreciate beauty more :)
