Sony Digital Paper
on: December 29, 2014, 04:45:34 PM
The other day I walked into a Sony store and noticed this interesting device. It's A4 in size and can annotate PDFs with a stylus. It has a passive, grey and black display.

It could be a pretty good digital sheet music display device, if it was not for the price (Sony dropped it to $999, from $1100 originally, but still...). Also, even though text appears quite sharp, the resolution (1600 x 1200) makes it a bit shy of the 300 DPI that I think should be the bare minimum for e-paper. The latest sticking point for me is the lag between the stylus and the display, as if you were writing with a pen and it took the ink a 1/3 of a second to appear on the paper...

Are there any lower price competitors to this? Just curious. I also wonder if this device could be coupled to a page turning pedal.

Cheers,
CG

AFAIK, its one of kind. I expect there will be copies one day. Apart from the price, the other downside might be thatit  can't be turned by a foot pedal (I think??).
Samsung are promoting their 12.2" tablet as a music reader. Its much heavier and thicker than digital paper, but it you can use an air turner with it. And although it's screen is smaller, if you had your pdfs cropped so that the music filled the whole screen, that would be about the same area as the printed part of a score. The border takes up the rest, and tablet screens (usually/always??) have black borders.

I have looked and looked for a pdf reader for sheet music. There are not many choices bigger than 10" out there. So sony can get away with the high price tag for now. If you can deal with reading pdf sheet music from 10" pad device, then you can get one for $100.00, but the notes are small and cramped.  It is hard to believe that we cant just go out and buy a pdf reader which uses standard score sizes like A4 or 8.5x11 for less than $200.00.
