various cadenzas for Hungarian Rhapsody 2
on: February 06, 2015, 01:55:22 AM
So the Ogdon Foundation did not get back to my inquiry, and by now i've finished most of the learning for this piece.
What are the available cadenzas that are played and have music available for this?
I'm aware of Hamelin, Horowitz, Tozer and Rachmaninov.

I posted a number of them
here
.
You really should write your own, though. Use the others as models, naturally, but a cadenza here should really showcase your abilities, so fill it with what you're good at and empty it of stuff you're not.

Much appreciated, thanks.
I sincerely wanted this as an opportunity to pay my respects to Ogdon, his isn't long winded and gets the point across.
For now, the Wild looks to suit my initial purposes. I haven't a compositional voice but the thought is very appropriate in this particular situation. I did do some heavy re-arranging of the Schubert Taubenpost for my last undergraduate recital and it was an extremely good idea in the end. We will see.

The cadenza's Liszt performed were typical of his time: simple and concise, mostly just an elaboration that extended up and down the register. This could have included a trill on that note and an elaborate figuration until it reached the bottom octave. It was not of any significant musical proportion and it added no new ideas unlike the monstrosities of the 20th century. So it's best not to use these monstrosities as examples for how to improvise a cadenza.

Quite. Liszt never just showed off. Nobody around at the time ever said that of him.
Wherever you're getting you history lessons from, faulty, you should ask for a refund. Seriously.

Now now, little ones, use this as an opportunity to develop self control like real men and perhaps consequently increase your chances with the opposite sex one day.
Back to the topic.
Well, like i said, I prefer the concise manner of Ogdon. I think they could have at least replied.
edit: know what, i'm fairly confident i can set it to paper by ear, it's brief and not terribly evolved musically.
Alternative options to terse and concise statements as a cadenza, I'm not sure. What is correct or not is something you can debate if you're overburdened with time. But you'll likely end up chasing your tail. I don't think Hamelin is the answer, but for him as an individual, i think it is. The Rachmaninov isn't a cadenza, it's a composition that sounds like pure rachmaninov out of context, at least to me.
If anyone else has any other scores, I'd be happy to see them. I think somewhere i read that Liszt's pupils provided some.
