"la folia"
on: February 23, 2015, 02:16:01 AM
The meaning of the theme thats the basis of a fair bit of music, what is it? Or rather the name. I looked it up and read it's related to the follies or games. I was under the impression that there was some allusion to madness in the term folia. But i'm very vague on it, i'm probably just thinking i had read that.
Beethoven-Alkan, concerto 3
Faure barcarolle 10
Mozart-Stradal, symphony 40

Hi diomedes,

you'd be right in the point that the word "follia" (resp.: with 2 "L") can mean such things.

https://dictionary.reverso.net/italian-english/follia

But since it stays a vague thing in connection to the topic which it occupies in the field of music, maybe we should give WP a chance here. Here's the link, at least it seems to explain some points. But still further investigation (e.g. follow the sources given there) may be necessary:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folia

Because sometimes, as we know, WP-articles could contain crap and wrong info, we always should read them in any case carefully, and in any case use other sources as well, if possible!
