Nocturnes...
on: February 27, 2015, 05:10:46 PM
Hi guys i have just discovered this great forum and i love it.

I ve just learnt the piano for around a year and i have just recently finished the waltz no 9 and 10 (op 69) in roughly a month.  i have not taken any exams so i have no idea what level or grade i belong to.

I love the nocturnes, how i wish i could play just one piece. Can some of you suggest which one would be easier? Or none of them are suitable level for a beginner like me?

Thanks all.

Take a look at the scores yourself. A lot of them aren't difficult at all.

Op. 9 no. 1/no.2, op. 15 no.3, op. 32no.1/no.2, op. 37 op. no. 1/no.2, and op. 48 no. 2.

The three posthumous ones aren't bad either. Go to imslp, look over the scores and pick one. Have fun :D

15/3 is a great one. With respect, however, I'd say that 32/1 might be a bit more musically difficult than would be good for you.

My first one was the posthumous c minor, which is almost definitely the simplest. Op 15 no 3 in g minor is on the simple side as well.

I don't think op.9 no.1 is easy but you can try I really like this one.
Chopin etudes op.10 No 1,3,12 op.25 No 12
Schumann and Grieg piano concertos A minor
Beethoven sonatas No.17, No.14
Rachmaninoff prelude B minor
and more...

I don't think I ever said it was easy. Challenging for a person who's only been playing for a year but not impossible. Most of the nocturnes are very doable. I would only suggest against the op. 9 no. 3 op. 15 no.1/no. 2, op. 27, op. 48 no.1, op. 55, and op. 62. The rest a very accessible. Stop trying to scare OP.

Chopin. Odd that it's taken to post 8 to actually utter the word.

Might I point out that he's not the only composer of Nocturnes?

Have any of you played around with the inventor of the nocturne, John Field? He's an interesting fellow.

I'm pretty sure most of us were aware of that. We knew who she was talking about because she #1 made another thread about Chopin, and #2 mentioned the op. 69 Waltzes.

I am calm. I just don't like it when people put words in my mouth.

Glinka's nocturne "La seperation" is beautiful and accessible.

When we say that that nocturne is easy, we just mean it's easy in comparison to the other nocturnes. It's not going to be easy for everyone. But don't be discouraged! Chances are if something feels very easy from the moment you start it, then you're not challenging yourself enough. Just keep working at it and you'll get it eventually.

Have a go at the Field nocturnes before tackling Chopin. When you learn to swim, you do not dive in at the deep end.
