What should I play?!?! HELP
on: April 15, 2015, 03:11:45 AM
Hey everyone, so I've got a piano competition coming up (well, in several months) but I want to start working on a piece for it. It's simple - play one piece and you're done. Minimum 5 minutes and Maximum 15. I really want to play something from Chopin because:

1. Chopin is the best
2. No one plays anything by Chopin in this competition
3. Chopin is the best
4. Chopin is the best

So anyway, could you help me decide? So I can play Beethoven Pathetique, Bach Italian concerto, Chopin Ballade 3, Etude 10/5, Etude 25/6. Something around this level of difficulty. I really like his Scherzo 2, ballade 1, and barcarolle, but I feel that these are overplayed. I would like to play Piano Sonata 3 (first mov.) But I know I know - I'm not at that level yet. Do you think I can handle Scherzo 2 ballade 1 or Barcarolle? If not, could you put in an idea?

THANKS A TON

It if you prefer longer ( I like the impromptu better but that's just personal taste  :D)

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. Those songs are both great! Visitor, how hard is that Romanze section of the E minor concerto? I've wondered that a LOT and I can't find it anywhere. Like is it comparable to Ballade 3? Easier? Harder? I really like it and you can have an accompaniment. If you win you get to play with the symphony in my town. :o It would be fun to play that with them!

You could play some of the repertoire you mentioned, actually. The second scherzo would probably be approachable, especially considering the etudes you've done :) The first ballade is harder, but is not that much more difficult than number 3- in fact, it's many of the same techniques, just on a larger scale.
Also, check out the Fantasie Op 49; a big piece, but within your reach most likely!

@Chopinlover

Thanks for the post! I have actually played around with Scherzo 2 and it is surprisingly easy up until the right hand starts doing those huge runs up and down while the left hand plays octaves :) I might want to play 1 or 2 more pieces before trying to tackle ballade 1, because I did struggle a little with Ballade 3! I will also check out the F minor. Thank you for the recommendations!  :D

The Fantasie, or the ballade? I'm hoping it's the former; the ballade in that key is ridiculously difficult.

I was talking about the fantasie in f minor. I know just enough to know that ballade 4 is... well... out of my league ;)
