a tip for composers?
on: May 08, 2015, 02:29:16 PM
Hi Everyone,
Some pianists have advocated practice in near or total darkness, maybe it works for composing as well. The article is titled
Darkness Sparks Creativity: How Dim Lighting Raises Self-Determination And Lowers Inhibitions
.

Maybe this effect of darkness is a factor in why the Nordic countries, especially before the arrival of electric lighting, have had a level of creative accomplishment disproportionate with the size of their populations as compared to other countries.
Mvh,
Michael

Rather amusing I must say, perhaps I'll try it some and check the result myself.

Hi senanserat,
I gave it a try. The notes, clefs and other such things, were all over the place. Maybe it is a new form of graphic notation?
[no, seriously, in my experience composing at a desk in dim lighting, I have noticed no variation in outcome as a result . . . I composed this little morbid item at a desk in dim lighting . . .

. . . but I could have done it with the same result while at one of Stockholm's beaches in the summer, admiring the glittering water and the great views off into the distance, and with the women running around in bikinis-and-less]
