Any gardeners here?
on: December 16, 2004, 02:41:21 AM
Got plans for spring yet?  Or are you like me, and you still have bulbs in the garage that need to go into the ground?  ::)

Jodi,

Jack here.  Glad to meet you.  I am a gardener in my free time and it is MY PASSION.  I am from Maine and the ground is frozen hard so nothing in the garage is going in the ground.  But I am lookng to spring to see what became of all the bulbs and other things I planted two months ago.

In the meantime...ski ski ski.

hi, jodi,
it's about as cold where i live as it is at mr. applesauce's.  i have big plans for spring.  i want to work over the entire yard one square foot at a time and give the place the curb appeal it currently lacks.

a few hoped-for projects:

weed the front boulevard
grow the wild clematis over a front gate arbor
grow vines over the dog run so passersby can't see the contents from the street (ugh)
prune and reshape all the shrubs--there are about three dozen that are completely out of control
put in some new flower beds
rehabilitate the lawn

i've kinda let things go to hell the past couple of years....

otoh, we might remodel the house instead....

Ms. Alice, that is Apple SEED.  I'm not sauced yet, thank you.

Here in Arizona, it's starting on prime gardening season.  Actually the first time gardeners here rouse themselves from the summer doldrums is to plant wildflower seeds in October.  You have to water them for about a week after sowing, then just sit back and forget where you put them until they start coming up in January.  By March, look out!

Right now I'm waiting for my winter veggies, mainly broccoli and brussels sprouts.  I'm the only one that likes the little sprouts, but they are so funny to grow that I always plant way too much.  I also have geraniums in pots all over the patio, and lots of people have petunias and pansies growing as well.  I have to watch what I plant in the ground because we have a lot of critters that will come in and decimate everything overnight.

I'm in the process of converting an annual bed that became a feedlot for our javelinas.  I'm going to turn it into a butterfly garden if all goes according to plan.

Strawberries, summer herbs, tomatoes all go into the ground in late February or early March.  The sooner the better for the berries and tomatoes, because you want to have the longest growing season possible before the sun scorches them to death.

Funny how our gardening is so different!

I was wishing last time I bought sprouts at the market that I had planted some this year.  They've been among my few great successes in the past.  I'm not all that big on veggies, but I like them and they're good for cancer prevention.

Jodi, I put some tulips in last month and transplanted a geranium to where it will receive a little more sunlight. Will be looking forward to spring soon. My neighbor chopped down a tree this fall so there will be more light for my lovelies next year, here in Brooklyn, NY ( ;) )

Brooklyn?  Does that mean you have a nice brick patio with room for lots of pretty containers?  I have a back deck that desperately needs some containers to make it seem more inviting.  I'm slowly collecting containers for it.

I've GOT to get those daffodils planted.  They're starting to sprout in my garage...

Well, since you asked, yes I do have a nice large brick patio and do some container gardening since my landlord planted bushes in what little gardening space was left after they built the patio. Come to think of it, I remember posting pictures of my backyard at another forum I frequent earlier this year (over there I use my first name, over here I use my middle name). I'll have to see if I can dig them up (ha, ha, no pun intended.)

You non-geeks need to get with it!  The scroll bars occur when you type some long continuous thing like a URL that can't be broken or that silly word from "Mary Poppins".  Anything that can't be broken and won't fit in this boxe's width causes a scroll bar.  I would explain more, but I need to go put some more duct tape on my black plastic glasses and clean the dandruff out of my pocket protector.  :P

Okay, Major Geek, how about this.  (I asked this elsewhere, and no one answered it, but I was off subject so I guess I deserved to be ignored ::) )  Why do some longish wrapped messages not have tool bas (which makes it almost impossible to read them) while others do?

Dandruff in pen pocket? - charming imagery.   :-X ;D
