A Fun Challenge
on: September 21, 2015, 06:08:58 PM
Hi everyone! I have a request...

I've been thinking for a little while that I'd like to push myself technically and see what I can do if I put my mind to it. To that end I'd like to hear suggestions for a challenging piece I could do.

I have up until now tried to be very methodical and restrained in my choice of repertoire, choosing only pieces I can handle and not pushing myself too far but now I really want to know what I'm capable of...

Now, I should make one thing clear, I have a phobia of ruining a good piece by tackling it too early so what I am looking for here is a slightly trashy but still musically enjoyable piece that I can "wreck" to my heart's content. The kind of challenge I'm looking for is principally technical and not musical. Also, I'm going to rule out a few composers like Bach, Chopin, Mozart and Beethoven, they're too important to me to ruin and I can't think of anything of theirs that's advanced enough that I'd be happy to risk it on.

I have been thinking primarily of Liszt but am not exactly sure which to do and I really don't want to ruin any of his better works either. I was thinking of maybe doing a Hungarian Rhapsody but again, I'm not sure.

Anyway please let me know what your ideas are :)

Oh and please link me to good performances and sources for sheet music where possible please :) Thankyou.

Haha, I am familiar with that one and it might be a bit much ;) I know I mentioned Liszt but I want to save the Transcendentals for when I can do them justice haha.

this definately fits the 'fun' part of the challenging. From Yuyama's children's music suite "Confections: A Piano Sweet", this is the finally that is a grand medley and includes quotes from every single other suite/mvmmnt prior to it so it's a great summary of the tunes of work as a whole, been playing aroudn with this for a while, and it's a blast

Grand Galop Chromatique would be perfect. Technically very hard, fun, and trashy.
Working on:
Beethoven - Waldstein Sonata
Bach - C minor WTC I
Liszt - Liebestraume no. 3
Chopin - etude 25-12

Dumbest post in the history of Pianostreet. That was what I was thinking as I was reading it. Good luck ruining and wrecking. Sorry I cant help - but maybe you can just take a sledge hammer to your piano. Dont limit yourself so much.

Actually, I would nominate YOURS. Completely unhelpful, not answering the question, discouraging, and just plain DUMB. He wasn't even asking IF he should, just wants to have some fun playing a piano piece that he knows he will never need to play in a concert, even if he won't play it well. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. That type of post is the exact thing that we're trying to get rid of in this forum, and you're certainly not helping anything.

I agree. Why does playing piano always, to some people, have to be their way and "cprrect"? Pianoplunker, I'm sorry to say, you are 25% as bad as that b!tch teacher.

PS  plunker: Just because someone is going to challenge themselves doesn't mean that they're necessarily going to ruin and wreck the piece. In other words, just because YOU would, doesn't mean other people are as untalented.

LOL, glad to be nominated for something. Just to clarify, in my opinion, the post was stupid, not the poster. I have nothing against the poster, and I would apologize if the poster was really hurt by something I posted. My opinion only. I cant stand the posts that say " what should I Play next?" It is a pet peeve of mine and I do not intend to take it out on one poster

You don't need to do it publicly on the forum. And by the way, there's nothing wrong with asking, what OP's think are smart helpful musicians, what to play next.

What about the Rondo Cappricciosso by Mendelssohn? This definitely fits the fun AND challenging parts that you want!

Challenge? I would think a lot to choose from.  Just broadly thinking

Kapustin maybe for modern?
For older and challenging. Clementi?
Perhaps a Dussek sonata?

I would research virtuoso pianists in an era and pick one of their compositions. Bound to find something technically challenging there.

"Slightly trashy" makes me think of Debussy's L'Isle Joyeuse. I love to play that noisy ending with the big chords and the flying leap.
