Restore Modify button please!
on: November 20, 2015, 11:52:09 PM
It really should go back to normal for several reasons.

1) when we want to add additional information or correct a mistake in a post we now cannot and instead must do a new response. This fragments the flow of discussion and can make things confusing.

2) Updating audition room now has totally died.

3) why let a small handful of people who decided to delete all their posts change the whole modify function for the majority of us who use it appropriately? Can you limit the amount of modifying per day perhaps, even if it were a few a day that would be enough!

I agree with this also! Maybe 5 modifies every 24 hours?

I think the audition room particularly needs the modify button.

1. Especially for some of the younger posters, whose performance calibre is more likely to change significantly over a few years, and who may end up with recordings perpetuated that they feel no longer adequately represent their standard.

2. Uploaded performances are presumably the intellectual property of the performer; thus surely the performer should have the right to withdraw the recording as they see fit. Under the current modification rules, this doesn't work with uploaded attachments, unlike with files uploaded to youtube or soundcloud where it is easy enough to hide or remove recordings.

I would also like to reiterate my request to have this feature restored.  The current practice of having the modify function permanently removed from a user after a short time period is more of a disservice to the Pianostreet community rather a deterrent to those the select few who wish to abuse it.  The application is far too broad for its supposed intent of preventing mass deletions.

Moving to a policy where modifications are limited to say 2 to 5 iterations per 24 hour period is much more sensible.

As others have also expressed, my greatest concern with the current policy is locking out users from their intellectual property housed in the Audition Room.  A user should be allowed to maintain access to their own recordings hosted on the site.

These are all legitimate points made by Lostinidle, Ronde, and Quantum.  I'm inclined to agree.
The incidents in question that led to the institution of the new rule have been just a few in all the years of the site.

Moving to a policy where modifications are limited to say 2 to 5 iterations per 24 hour period is much more sensible.

Yes, because anyone who wished to delete all of their posts would be very limited and discouraged by only a few modifications allowed per day.  And moderation could be apprised of a pattern of deletions by a member.

I support this 100%. The 30 minute modify timer is annoying.

I'll add my support for quantum's clever idea of imposing a limit on the number of modifications in a day by any given member. That seems to solve most of the issues. Indexes could be maintained, mass deletions would stop, and alterations to the odd old recording could be achieved within that restriction. The only question is whether it is easy for the moderator to implement it.

What might you rather I sign as? The Man in the Moon? Father Christmas? The Archbishop of Canterbury? Thalistair?

No, I do try not to forget my name although, who knows, the onset of upper middle age might eventually make that increasingly difficult...

By the way, I'm not "dominant" around here or indeed anywhere else.

Whoever "they" might be, no one has yet suggested that I - or indeed anyone else - should not sign of posts and, since "Father Christmas" was obviously a frivolous suggestion, I would take it as seriously as it weas intended and no more if I were you...

It was supposed to be implied, I suppose. Perhaps it didn't work as well as P3 had hoped for. Also, he did take the father Christmas seriously as you; It was a sarcastic reply.
Personally, I don't have anything against you signing your name, I just think it's a bit unusual given how nobody else on this forum, save for Thal and occasionally AJ, sign their name.

Ok I think it's pretty sad I've messaged admin and even posted here and got not even a single whisper of response. Furthermore now I can't see recent replies to my posts or even messages to me and have to do it all manually. Urg this is really bad at least I'm not a paying member or I'd be livid. Been here over 10 years though and the functionability of this site is getting less not more!

An update would be appreciated.  Are there technical problems with implementing some of the suggestions in this thread?

I would like to reiterate the request to restore the Modify button. On a purely personal level, I would like to point out that I have recordings imminent of which I would like to share selections: furthermore there is some possibility of them being released outwith my copyright control, and in this respect I would like to quote from the Audition Room guidelines, namely:

On this board you can upload your own recordings to get comments from other members.

..,

Rules and guide lines:

  • Audio files must be in mp3 format and the maximum file size per post is 20 Mb.
  • Audio recordings must be uploaded as attachments. Posting links to files outside this server is not allowed.
  • Uploading recordings of performances that are copyright protected  is strictly prohibited. This includes CD and live recordings by other musicians than yourself, of which you do not have permission to make the recording publicly available here.

As I cannot be sure I will retain copyright of these recordings (which would potentially mean PS is flouting someone else's copyright) I have no option but to host them externally, thus flouting the attachment regulation. I admit I have already flouted it previously, but (under current circumstances) it is the only way in which I can retain control over the dissemination of my own material. I am confident I am not the only one who feels this way.

This really needs to be changed - thanks.
