I am about to play in MTNA
on: January 08, 2016, 05:40:41 AM
Hi guys, I play in the MTNA divisional senior competition on Saturday. That's probably tomorrow by the time you read this. I am nervous! If you are a Christian, could you pray for me? And non-christians, wish me luck!! :D If any of you have any performance tips, please let me know! I will let you guys know when I lose. ;)

Bets of luck! If you're too nervous consider taking some beta blockers.

OK, I would pray if I knew how, but the problem is I don't know how. Can someone instruct me on how to pray to God?

Find a reason to pray for, find a good place to pray, and then, pray to god !!

Do no forget the "amen" !  ;)

Good. Usually, I've been praying in bed, but I was sure I was doing it wrong. Good thing I included the 'amen'!  :D

Good luck to you, Noah! You've probably already played by now, but I'm sure you played quite well.
I'm partial to the Ginastera in your repertoire, myself ;D

Thanks everyone! It went very well! Some college student (I think Juliard) won the thing. They were pretty much all college students majoring in piano performance. And then there was me!! :D But I felt that the performance went very well and I had lots of fun doing it. The judges said that they were very impressed with the preludes (they have improved 500% since I put them on youtube). One judge afterward asked if I had heard of the Chopin competition and told me to consider it for 2020. I said, "Yes, I believe I have heard of that!" ;D Here's where I was playing.

I will upload the Ginastera and Bach 2. Then it's on to new rep! I want to try to convince my teacher to let me play wilde jagd and Beethoven 109.

that's how I felt the entire time I was at UNT...lol

I am sooooo happy for you Noah.  I love that recital hall... playing in venue's like that is so nice.  Stage managers, nice green room, usually food backstage -- ushers and janitorial services, too...  that's the life.  ;D

It is far better to be happy with yourself and your performance and lose then it is to be miserable with yourself and win.    --you will lose far more sleep feeling guilty about winning with a poor performance than you ever will losing in spite of a personal best effort.  ;D  As long as you don't make a habit of lying in bed counting missed notes instead of sheep.

the Chopin competition!!!  guess we need to start a fan club for you and AJ... I cannot imagine what you two will sound like in 4 years.

I have to say, too--if a judge at MTNA said that to you... wow---that meant he was seriously impressed with you and your potential... I mean, damn... that is not something that is said without forethought in the world of piano teachers.  Especially at MTNA!

what was that I said about your "future's so bright--I gotta wear shades?" 8)  looks like I am not the only one who feels that way.

we need a name for your fanclub... i.e. the Arcs. :)

Thanks dc!! :D But doesn't every Arc go DOWN as quickly as it came UP? HAHAHA

Yes, I only missed 2 or 3 notes in the whole performance somehow. And I cannot imagine what it would be like to just play chopin piece after chopin piece ;D

even I, with my decades of performance experience, and my lifetime at the piano-- cannot begin to imagine what it must feel like to be a competitor in Warsaw..  I will just wait for you to tell me all about it afterwards when I read your memoires. :)

ok Arc is a bit, too cliché--if it inspired geometry humor... :)

Oh yes and the Juliard kid who won played Petrouchka as well as the Andante Spianato/Grand polonaise. I saw her, she was really good and definitely deserved to win.

It's hard, but it can challenge you to be ready technically for 2020  :D

Me, the hardest thing I've attempted was Scarbo, and I failed miserably.  :P Maybe I should pick it up again. ::)

Maybe I'll just try the Danse Russe. And I accidentally spelled Petroutchka without the 2nd t.

Sorry, I can't just "try" a 15 minute long piece. I'm thinking new rep will hopefully look something like:

Beethoven Op. 109
Liszt Wilde Jagd
Stravinsky Danse Russe from Petrouchka

That is what I will propose to my teacher. That will be a handful.

Anyways, we sincerely hope you can study at Curtis. (And hopefully, you might be able to hang out with that hot Jap chick of your dreams  :D)

Teacher changed the beethoven to op. 90. Well that's all right. I just tentatively asked about Petrouchka or Ondine, as well as the Liszt Etude... let's see...

And if I went to Curtis, I know what would be first on my to do list... ;D

Yes. 90 will work, but 109 is my favorite. And heck with Aimi, I'm going to see my real life crush in a few weeks. That will blow every other girl out of the water for a LONG time :D

Good. It's one of the few B sonatas I actually like to listen to :)

And I think we agreed that you need to work on your musical side instead of just concentrating on virtuosity?  ;)

When I record all musicality goes away. Not when I practice at home or perform.

When I record all musicality goes away. Not when I practice at home or perform.

when you record with what?  anything?   If you are aware of that camera rolling or recording that can definitely slip you up.    It's the anxiety of knowing that once you record it...you will have to live with it forever...lol

play two pieces on your recording... tell yourself you will be recording the 2nd piece you play and the first is just for warm-up

Record both pieces then wait at least 3 days (at least)--then listen to it.  If you wait--your head will forget some of the painful areas and you will be far less emotionally attached to the recording.  It makes it possible to have an objective opinion without slicing yourself to ribbons on the inside.  For a live performance with an audience.... you should wait at least a week before viewing the footage... (yeah...right--like who's gonna do  that?)  if you can hold out it will make a difference... a big one.

when you listen back to the recording of your two pieces---decide which one is better...  often times it will be the "warm-up" piece believe it or not.

I record 10-20 minute sessions and lift out what's worthy...usually about 3 minutes in I am able to forget I am recording.

Good question. I might post the exposition to the tempest, along with 37/1. 32/1 actually had t be dropped due to performance time constraints, so my current Chopin is 10/8.
