Piano Concerto Suggestions?

No, I am not looking to play a piano concerto  But, my knowledge of piano concertos is extremely limited so I thought my Piano Street friends could help me out  To be honest, when listening to classical music, I am mostly drawn to solo piano music and consequently I am not familiar with many of these great works. I am wondering if you guys could suggest piano concertos to me that you enjoy, so I can expand my knowledge. Thank you 

PS I do know of the Grieg, Rach 1,2, Prokofiev 3, and Chopin 1, so please don't mention those.

Hmm, what about the Gershwins? Rhapsody in blue and concerto in F are pretty boss. Chopin's fantasia on polish air or his op. 2 variations are also boss. Scriabin's 1st concerto...um

@rach_forever Wow just listened to Martha Argerich play the 3rd Rach and I must say it was sublime...at times so simple and tender and at others, tumultuous and passasionate. It is a very rich piece and was quite an experience to listen to it. Thank you for the suggestion!

I actually didn't know Rach had a fourth, nor Prokofiev a 4th or 5th...
But anyways, thank you very much for the suggestions. I did just listen to the 40 minute Rach 3, so I'll have to listen to the other ones tomorrow. I'll let you know what I think

Why didn't anyone mention Mozart? I am playing K.595, and it is very fun. It also has a lot of drama in it.

I really like Beethoven's, especially no. 4 (though all of them are terrific).
Also - BACH!!! The most famous one is the D minor one, but again - they're all great.
I'd also recommend listening to Ravel's G major concerto and to Saint Saens' 2nd and 5th concertos.
Some other famous ones you should know - Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Grieg...
Damn, it's so hard to name just a few...

What a masterpiece.

There's also this from one of Liszt's favourite pupils. More showoffy than music though.

I've been listening to this lots lately; quite a fantastic concerto which deserves more attention, much like his others.

Listen to that moment from 16:50 onwards -- pure bliss, especially the ending of the movement.

If you want to have a deep appreciation of the piano concerto, start with concertos that more clearly reveal the forms that they often utilize.  Beethoven is a good place to start.  The Cm #3 is the one that I am intimately familiar with as I played it in college.  Sonata form for the first movement and a rondo for the 3rd.  Very typical and the way Beethoven develops his themes are exemplary in this one.  The romantic composers often use the same forms, but it is not as easy to follow as the earlier works. 

I think if you listen to earlier piano concertos they will clue you in on how to listen to the later ones.

^ Listen to some earlier concerti. Beethoven is a great one, though IMO the 1st and 2nd are rather bland. The C minor concerto is an excellent one (that I'm messing around with at the moment), as is the 4th. The 5th, known as the Emperor concerto, is a little harder to follow, but still nice.
Mozart concerti are also good choices; No. 20 in D minor, No. 21 in C major, No. 24 in C minor, and No. 27 in A major probably being the best of the lot.
Mendelssohn also has one in G minor that's fairly digestible.

Don't forget Stanford and Scharwenka!

Lyapunov and Balakirev have some nice concertos too.

I'd also recommend Taktakishvili and Tcherepnin have some awesome concertos, especially the former.

Oh, and I almost forgot Vladigerov! The second movements to his are so beautiful.

Well, that's quite an achievement in itself, however unfortunatae some might perceive it to be! Medtner's orchestral technique admittedly leaves rather a lot to be desired in all three of his concertos - something that one could never sensibly say about the Busoni concerto - but the piano writing is as uniquely wondrous as you might expect of the composer and at least manages never to be at loggerheads with the orchestral writing, such as it is (he claimed to find orchestrating his concertos to be a chore, which is of course not the way one should approach such tasks)...
