Grade Levels of these Pieces
on: December 30, 2004, 08:24:59 PM
Hi, I am over in the US at a conservatory- I am currently in my second year, and don't know much about grade levels of pieces, because we don't really have them over here.  I am just curious as to what the grade levels of the pieces I am playing for my exams are.  Pieces I am currently studying:
Bach- Toccata in G major
Beethoven- Sonata Op. 7
Liszt- Petrarch Sonnet no. 104
Liszt- Transcendental Etude no. 10
Chopin- Etude op. 10 no. 1
Rachmaninov- Prelude Op. 23 no. 7
Prokofiev- Diabolic Suggestion

Typically once you get into standard concert literature, it is beyond "grades."  In the US, some people use Jane MaGrath's grading system (The Pianist's Guide to Standard Teaching and Performance Literature - published by Alfred).  She is the only one in the US to attempt to grade pieces.  She goes from level 1-10, which is beginners to early advanced levels.  Here are some examples:

Level 1 - Bartok, Mikrokosmos, Vol 1
Level 2 - Turk, Pieces for Beginners
Level 3 - Latour, Sonatinas; Kabelevsky, Pieces for Young People Op. 39
Level 4 - Anna Magdelena Bach Notebook; Gurlitt, Album for the Young Op 140; Tchaikovsky Album for the Young Op 39
Level 5 - Anna Magdelena Bach Notebook; Sonatinas by Attwood, Lynes; Menotti, Peometti
Level 6 - Clementi, Sonatinas Op 36; Burgmuller, 25 Progressive Pieces Op 100
Level 7 - Kuhlau and Diabelli Sonatinas; Bach easier two-part inventions; Bach, Little Preludes; Dello Joio, Lyric Pieces for the Young
Level 8 - Moderately difficult Bach two part inventions; Beethoven easier variation sets; Field nocturnes; Schumann, Album Leaves Op 124; Schubert Walzes; Turina Miniatures
Level 9 - Easier Bach 3 part inventions, easiest Haydn Sonata movements, easiest Mendelssohn Songs Without Words, easiest Chopin Mazurkas
Level 10 - Bach 3 part inventions, easiest Chopin nocturnes, Beethoven Sonatas Op 49, Op 79; Mozart Sonata K 283; Muczynski

That's how she grades.  Anyway, everything you are playing is out of the level system.  I don't know how high other levels go from other countries and what all they include.
When you earnestly believe you can compensate for a lack of skill by doubling your efforts, there's no end to what you can't do.

I would say Beethoven Sonatas op. 49 would be more of a grade 4-6 =/
I scare people; people scare me; it's a mutual thing!!!

Oh well, based on what was posted previously, all your pieces are way beyond level 10...

Pretty interesting program. ;D
