One movement of one concerto?

Well, it would have to be the 1st movement of the Brahms Concerto Nr. 2. I do not have a 'favourite' ('if one has a favourite, or even a few favourites, one has not listened to enough!') but that triumphant B-flat opening followed by the very dark and passionate F minor section is just sublime!

What I love about the Brahms 2 is that, structurally, it's more of a symphony with a piano part than a concerto!

Then again, is there really much of a difference between playing it with an orchestra and playing it by yourself...? It's like the whole polonaise brillante thingy...feels like the orchestra was shoed in. :[

HMMM

If i had the skill then Prokofiev's 2nd. YES, now that's a concerto!

I find all concertos pretentious sounding.
I'll fold my arms in front of the ready-orchestra and announce to everyone that I'm an unpretentious winner who doesn't believe in playing pretentious concertos , pick up my trophy , and walk off stage.

And then the first bars of orchestra part sound

and we see you running back to the piano making apologetic gestures.

Edit: hmm, I wanted to paste sth into post body. Didn't work so well, I guess ::)

I dont like the entire concerto enough to actually dedicate myself to learning the entire thing, but I do see myself learning the second movement in the future. Very veeeeeeeeery beautiful:

I would love to play this with an orchestra.

If I had the chops for it - rach 2 mvt 3.
Predictable and overplayed, right? IDGAF!!!
This is such a powerful movement, I can't even listen to it without losing my mind - imagine PLAYING IT WITH AN ORCHESTRA. I'd be set for life.

you might want to give this a listen.  This dude i believe was 2nd only to liszt as pianist to perform all 24 of the chopin etudes publically.  Wrote a lot of really good but difficult music.was even on faculty of moscow conservatory and was regarded as one of the finest virtuosos of his day.
this thing is grand and jiggy. I would be torn on if i might do this since i love so many concertos so much.
i mean just listen to the piano entrance. It doesnt do so like a lot of concertos, piano comes in after a few bars of orch intro w a freakin awesome cadenza! Then its states that boss theme, octave time baby!!!

Liapunov's second piano concerto. And, as it's a one-movement work, I'ld get to play all of it  ;D

It's like not even a concerto.  It's more like Chopin was writing a piano piece and heard his buddy trip down the stairs with a bunch of string instruments and decided to throw it in the piece.

Nice choices! Of course it is very difficult to choose just one movement of one work between so many gorgeous pieces our there.
I would choose Saint Saens 2nd concerto in g-minor, mov 3. Even though I find there are concertos which are more touching and beautiful I still am head over hills over the energy and thrill this concerto conveys. 3rd movement is pretty much like a ride on a rollercoaster! If I won a competition that would be exactly the right piece for me to play :)

Hm.. Hard choice. My favorite right now is the 1st movement of Beethoven's 4th (G major). I'm also currently learning the 1st movement of the C minor (3rd) as well, so I'd have to decide between those.
If not those, 3rd movement of the Chopin f minor.

I love that 1st mov of the III concerto! Has been my favorite for a long time. Hope you are having fun learning it?

I changed my mind. Indecisive about another concerto. That woman, Cecile Licad, ruined the g-minor concerto for me. I wish I could unsee/unlisten her performance.

I'm planning to audition for a competition next year with the 1st movement of either Chopin's 1st concerto or Rachmaninoff's 3rd.

Chopin 1st, Mov. 2
Rach 2 Mov. 1, 2
Rach 3 Mov. 1
Saint-Saens 1 Mov. 1
One selected by random from the Standard Repertoire

That's 6 movements...roll a die and I'd try to play whichever one. I'm far from ready though :(
I am trying to become Franz Liszt. Trying. And failing.

You're very welcome! If you ever have requests I'll happily oblige.

Speaking of which Lyapunov and Balakirev have some fine concertos I've been meaning to do.

Quite a fan of Tcherepnin and Tveitt's concertos. Very unique in their own way. Shame they're not going to be public domain for a very very long time.

Hmmm.
What are you playing for? Yourself or the audience?
How do you feel today?
Today I would play for my own simple enjoyment...

I think Beethoven 5/3 would win out for me only just over Beethoven 5/1.

Have the balakirev sonatas been uploaded? If they haven't, then you ought to do those first, the second one especially. Oh yes, Lyapunov's 1st concerto has a very toccata like feel to it which is quite unique. I feel like the orchestra and piano lack synergy in some places, but that's just my opinion.

This dude i believe was 2nd only to liszt as pianist to perform all 24 of the chopin etudes publically.

I sat about 15 feet away from Ruth Slenczynska in 1979 as she performed all 24 Chopin Etudes for an audience of about 150.

It was absolutely astounding.  Here hands were like little doll hands and she was able to just cut through the score with a precision and velocity that were, for lack of better words, other-worldly.

As for the original post's question - without a doubt, Brahms #2.
Chopin Ballades
Chopin Scherzos 2 and 3
Mephisto Waltz 1
Beethoven Piano Concerto 3
Schumann Concerto Am
Ginastera Piano Sonata
L'isle Joyeuse
Feux d'Artifice
Prokofiev Sonata Dm
