Bach Double Violin Concerto

Recently my friend played me the Bach Double Violin Concerto and I was intrigued by the clarity and counterpoint between the two violins.  Does anyone know anything about the Bach Violin Concertos?

Bach wrote 4 violin concertos, i think.
One of them is for 2 violins in Dminor, i think
I also know some of his keyboard concertos came from his violin concertos, i think

     I'm not sure if I played the Bach double violin concerto you've mentioned.... The one I played with the orchestra part reduced to piano was excellent, if I can remember clearly, Bach used a lot of homophonic texture between the 2 violins, and a lot of imitation, sequences as well in the piece... Is this the one you're talking about? I remember the very powerful and almost vivaldi-furious like d pedal points.....I really like double concertos, for violin, flute, anything...

amee, Bach's concertos are mostly reconstructions of each other, the double violin concerto was also trasncribed as a double keyboard concerto in c minor, the triple violin concerto in d major has been reconstructed from the triple keyboard concerto, because the original manuscript has been lost, in fact only about half of Bachs concertos are in their original form, the other half have been remade from concertos for other instruments,

Yeah, the one my friend played was in D minor.  
This is the first double concerto I've heard that's not out of a CD and I am amazed!  It's so beautiful how the melody weaves into each other...somehow it is different hearing it from a CD then actually hearing it in front of me.

Your post about Bach's Double Violin Concerto caught my attention.

I don't know just how each of Bach's concertos originated, but I do know that Bach would often recycle his own or other composers' material by transfering music from one medim to another.  This, I think, was a common practice during the Baroque era and throughout the history of western music for that matter.

I would be interested to know more about your friend's performance of the piece.  Was this a performance with orchestra, a reduced version (e. g., violins and piano), or what?

I have a recording of this piece but I've never heard it performed live.  After what you've had to say about it I can't wait to hear it without a stereo system in the way!

My friend performed a reduced version with another violin and a piano.  The other violinist was actually her twin sister!  They are both amazing at the violin.

i kno excatly what u r torking about, i have played it myself! it has 3 movements and i recently heard the 3rd movement played by an australian youth orchestra, but instead of 2 violins it was a violin and a clarinet! it is 1 of mi favourite duets on the violin. the first movement is in the suzuki violin school repertoire, r ur twin friends suzuki? where did they play it?

Yup they are Suzuki.  They played it in a school assembly in front of everyone.

they're a LOT easier than the bach keyboard concerti. The double that you speak of is standard issue, usually played after about a year of study. Although as with all bach, extremely difficult to perfect.

The second movement of the d minor is a canon.  I think one of Bach's loveliest movements is the slow movement of the E major concerto.
