Beethoven-32 Variations Cminor Good Competition Piece?
on: January 02, 2005, 09:58:48 PM
Are the 32 variations in Cminor a good competition piece? Overplayed? Any other Beethoven works (none over 10 min) that would be better? No sonata movements. No bagatelles...dances ect...
Thanks,
DLu

Yes, WoO 80. I would do the Eroica or Diabelli Vars if I had time though. Thanks for the input and encouragement!

Also, are there any other classical period variations that you would recomment (still under 10 min).

for a recital? mozart- come un agnelo, salve tu domine, unser dummel pobel meint (or something...  :( ) haydn - andante con variazioni f moll.

but for a competition, i can't think of others better than beethoven - the 3 ones you mentioned

also, (ugh...I am making this too difficult) are there any notable variations on a theme from the classical period...

Try Mozart's variations on a minuet by Duport, K.573.

Hi
Mozart´s 12 variations K179 (189a) is also a nice piece. It´s about 10 minutes.  ;)

Yes! Yes! Yes!  Beethoven 32 Variations in C minor.  It is a wonderful work.  :P Each variation has its own character, even when it is just a left handed version of the right hand.

They are hard to play, musically and technically, ‘cos you’ve got to get it right straight away, each variation lasting only eight bars.  But the piece is so interesting and just right for a competition.

Spend a lot of time getting the theme right; each left hand chord being weighty and exactly in time.  I make the left-hand chords legato until the beginning of the sixth bar.

The Haydn F minor Variations is a beautiful work, but it just doesn’t have the variety of the Beethoven, though it has an explosive and extended coda.
