Ernesto Nazareth
on: October 22, 2016, 04:01:33 PM
I've recently discovered Ernesto Nazareth a Brazillian composer and I am having a lot of fun learning this piece. I thought I'd share the recommendation as I don't see much stuff about him on the Internet but his I've tracked down a few wonderful pieces a good mix of classical and Latin style. I don't think I'll ever play it as well as Katsaris but it's great inspiration. I might start another topic of less known composers to dip my toes into.

Hi tinyhands.
I'm a big Nazareth fan as well. Which piece is it you're working on? "Odeon" seems to be the most popular and it's great fun to play or listen to but many of the other pieces are quite attractive. I think Nazareth's reputation has enjoyed at least a mild resurgence over the past couple of decades or so.
If you're not familiar with the music of Zez (Eleazar) Confrey you might want to try to track some of it down. Only a few pieces are Latino flavoured like Nazareth, but he wrote loads of "novelty" piano pieces - many of which (I think) are better than the famous "Kitten on the Keys". I think most of his music is still under copyright so you might have to check libraries or see if you can purchase an anthology. I have one published by CPP/Belwin Inc.
best wishes,
jeff ok

Good to know I'll check him out, thanks for the recommendation. I like learning about other composers who are not the usual suspects, there really is a wealth of stuff out there! I'm learning ' Turbilhao de Beijos' which I think translates as 'whirlwind of kisses?' It's full of character especially the 2nd and 3rd sections, I'm really enjoying it.
I've pasted a link below of Katsaris playing it

Odeon is also a fun piece.

Thanks chopinlover01 and Jeff ok - I had a listen to both your recommendations! Brilliant stuff
. I always like to play stuff with a strong pulse I can dance too, it comes much easier to me, than music that is abstract.

I like Nazareth very much. My favorite pieces from him are Escorregando and Brejeiro, check those out!
