The Moonlight Sonata is most certainly my favorite (Sonata Quasi Una Fantasia). Musically, it is driving and sweet, not long-winded, and it's always been a favorite of mine.

Moonlight sonata is the best pianowork ever created, period.
Claudio Arraus 1963 recording is very well done.

This is a ridiculously hard question to answer, considering how many great ones there are. My favorite this week might be Pollini's late sonatas (esp. op. 109, op. 111) and Richard Goode's op. 101.

Which reminds me, is anyone else disturbed by the presence of wildlife noises in several of Ashkenazy's Beethoven recordings? I'm quite certain there are bird noises throughout his Pastoral and Appassionata.

for recording's I am pretty moved by some of Brendels last five sonatas especially his Hammerklavier. The set i'm talking about is the older one on Vox. Not the greatest sound in the world but amazing playing. I haven't heard much from the more modern recordings like Goode or Kovacevich. What does everyone recommend.
