This is just my thoughts and it's in not way a comment on anyone who has posted here in this discussion. However, I often wonder if it's a generational thing? Sometimes I think people brought up with the internet/social media vs people a little older, have quite a different attitude to comments or criticisms online. I'm 41 so I was the generation that was kind of halfway I suppose. (Life before and after internet) When I talk to younger people, I can sometimes find it strange that they disassociate the fact that a person online is a real person with feelings...I've known people to make comments or troll (not saying rachmaninoff_forever is a troll!) and it often seems it's either because they say 'it's no big deal, it's just a throwaway comment ' or they say 'they put themselves out there to be judged anyway'
I actually find it a bit odd that people do put themselves on the internet to be critiqued and judged..(rate my face..ask me anything and sites like that) cause common sense says you'll get half the crackpots in the world tearing strips off you. I heard a lecture once about how it's part of a bigger problem now in society..we are becoming disengaged with real emotion and feelings as everyone puts everything online and sells a version of themselves (instagram or vlogs) they lay everything bare, and the public can see them as fair game for critique and ridicule.
Even on a forum once where I posted a question, I got a not nice comment from someone (which was kind of unrelated to the post) so then the discussion started about online abuse and quite a few comments were 'this is the Internet forums deal with it.'
Now I don't know these people, they don't know me so I wasn't overly offended however, as I had put myself 'out there' and bared my soul for a question..It did feel quite personal and I suppose slightly hurtful. But then I reminded myself it was probably some guy hating his life that would never have the guts to say something to your face, so he hides behind his computer and posts angry messages..lol..
While I'm not into the whole touchy feely..praise everyone mentality, I do think people do not always realise the impact a negative word or down rating could have. Yeah it could be some kid or even an adult putting a video up...and if they are self confident and aware that's great and they can take criticism on the chin. But I sometimes think, maybe it's just a wee shy kid that doesn't have the guts to play to anyone in person, and maybe for him 10 people liking his video is a wee confidence boost..so why rain on his parade..at least he tried....
As my mother always said 'if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all .' 🤗
I just wish people were generally nicer to each other, there's a lot of sh*t in the world without encouraging negativity.
