Two paraphrases
on: June 11, 2017, 11:04:42 PM
My own settings, a delicate one taken from Bellini, and a more bombastic one from Verdi.

These will be appearing commercially in September as part of a full transcriptions CD, so this is a bit of a forum sneak preview.

(for comparison, here's an original, minus the orchestral introduction. Sopranos tend to play around with the vocal line a bit more than I feel I can necessarily justify in a pianistic context; there's also a brief vocal cadenza in this performance which doesn't exist in the original edition I have and consequently I didn't attempt to replicate it. Beautiful velvety voice - the piano can't compete! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qnn_heZtqE0)

And, more famously, the second paraphrase -

Thanks :) I had a typo in the (private) soundcloud link for the first one, which will explain the lack of audio. I've edited it in the original post, so it should now play.  I kind of threw the kitchen sink, in terms of pianistic devices, at the second paraphrase!

The crystalline sound you achieve in the right hand is wonderful in the Bellini, Andrew.
I look forward to hearing more.

Thanks. I think the rh works best when it's impersonating a flute in the introduction. I'm not as initially convinced when it comes to mimicking the soprano (which enters at 0.52 and is intended to be more forward than the flute preface). When the texture thickens from around 1.50 I'm fine with the soprano sound - it seems to have more body, and I'm not sure if this is a consequence of greater / more overt harmonic back up.

hello Andrew,

The Bellini was just so beautiful ... and
Verdi's Miserere was a refreshing contrast ..
Thanks for posting these excellently interpreted pieces

Thanks emill. The Bellini was my first real attempt at writing a slow, fireworks-free transcription, so I'm particularly pleased people have liked it.
