Fingering the WTC (Book 1) Prelude
on: January 22, 2005, 01:00:34 AM
I've got this beast almost up to speed, but as I do so, I find that some of the fingering that I was using at slower speed is just not working (tripping over black keys, etc.). Accordingly I have a question about fingering in a specific part of the piece.
In measures 25, 26, 27 the right hand is driving me nuts.
What I've been doing is (right hand only, after the left plays the first 3 notes):
1 3 1 2 1 4 1 5 4 2 1 2 1
In measure 26:
1 3 1 2 1 3 1 5 3 1 2 1 2
In measure 27:
1 3 1 2 1 4 1 5 4 2 1 2 1
The dumb thumb is the getting me all bollixed up. Especially in measure 26 with the thumb on C and hitting the A-flat with 2.
Any suggestions, anyone?
Thanks in advance,
George

Arrgh! I didn't mention which prelude (*slap*).
It's the c-minor!

I play 25 and 27 basically the same as you've indicated.

It is possible to play bars 25 and 27 in one hand position thus:
Bars 25 and 27
2321242543212
It is not very kind on your hand, though - it's a bit of a stretch to play at such a speed, especially as you are having to reach down into the tenor. That said, bars 1-25 can be taken quite slowly, in the opinion of Professor Tovey. This way, he says, you get to appreciate more than just one harmony per bar.
Bar 26
1312132532112
That's what I play, but it is out of laziness, rather than anything else. I think I get it to work, but I'd probably change it if I was giving a performance, thus:
1312132531323
Feel free to mix and match from all the ideas suggested.
Richard.
