The size of a concert pianist's repertoire
on: November 25, 2018, 02:12:03 PM
Pianists like Argerich, Barenboim, Zimmerman, what are the size of their repertoire? How fast can they learn a new piece? How many compositions have they studied for all these years?

I read somewhere that Arthur Rubinstein memorized some 80 piano concertos, Yuja Wang has around 20 piano concertos in her repertoire, and Valentina Lisitsa memorizing in 3 days what her peers did with 3 months, these feats to me, are quiet unbelievable.

I think Vladimir Ashkenazy recorded more music than any other pianist, ranging from Chopin's complete solo piano works, to all 32 of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas, to Rachmaninoff's Complete (including 5 rach concertos)Piano Works!!! How in the world Ashkenazy manages this is beyond me, Does he memorize all this? or does he sight-read a majority of his recordings?

I would expect Powell, Cimirro and Hodges to also have ridiculous repertoires.  Gieseking and Lewenthal also had big ones.

With strong reading skills it becomes unnecessary to memorize many entire works. For much more complicated virtuosic works certain passages will need to be memorized but then often these themes are repeated so there is little need to recreate the wheel of memory every time so to say. The stronger your playing and reading skills are the larger your resulting repertoire. I could write thousands of pieces down and there are probably tens of thousands more pieces i dont know of or will be created in the future that I could immediately play at concert standard, but it seems a little irrelevant to list such things.

If it comes to totally memorized repertoire and playing without sheets, it is not impossible to have thousands of pages of works mostly memorized and then when performance demands require a work you can polish it back up very fast. I would find it hard to believe that someone can play thousands of pieces by memory with the maximum potential of their musicality and technical capbilities instantly applied on demand.

Yes,... In S. Richter's biography I remember being taken aback - some 80 differing recital programs - or some such, from memory of course. .. And as I recall, the maverick was also the first (?)- to  fearlessly use the score in solo works.. And also proclaim it was a better approach..

Just a minor thought on Ian Pace's bizarre repertoire list (and I must point out that I respect him immensely)
When did anyone last hear him play, say, a Mozart sonata, or a French Suite by Bach? And was it any good?

This is absolutely unbelievable - how big can they get.

Playing so many abstract compositions without making any yourself. I am tired of this "classical music" mentality.

It's just mind-boggling. Being swept in the sea of this scene of playing difficult piano music perfectly to the note in posh concert halls. So different from the traditional approach to music.

Well, to each his own I guess.

I dont know of anyone today or in recent times in past that had a larger active repertoire than Sara Davis Buechner

Sara Davis Buechner’s concerto repertory is the widest of any major pianist appearing before the public today.  In concert, she has performed over 100 different works for piano and orchestra.

Then how come I've never heard of her?

I have a very large amount of exposure, which is why I'm surprised I have not heard of her. I've searched for her on youtube and I don't see many recordings of her either. More than likely I HAVE heard her or seen her before but forgotten about it (I have youtube comments going back for many years on videos I thought I was watching for the first time).

Not sure if you are simply amazed at the quantity of some repertoires, or you aspire to it as well.

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
