[Video] Variations on a Theme by Paganini
on: January 29, 2019, 06:35:58 AM

This is an original set of Paganini Variations that I composed last year. They're a bit much for me, so there's lots of mistakes, but I just wanted to share.

These variations are very musically effective, and I enjoyed them thoroughly. I especially enjoyed the rhythmic and stylistic variety, which kept my interest throughout. I also really appreciated the nod to other great composers whether intentional or not (ie. the Brahms-like third variation, the Shostakovich waltz-like variation 6, the very clever Cereli Theme/Schubert Serenade mix in Variation 9, the Liszt/Thalberg like coda towards the end of the last variation).

As far as your playing goes, I have a high tolerance for mistakes (sometimes I prefer them), low tolerance for poor musicality. I think your playing is very effective, and in my opinion, the mistakes and perceived technical deficiencies in your playing do not detract at all from the musicality of the piece.

Altogether I think this deserves more attention, and I'd very much be interested in hearing more of your compositions.

Thank you so much! That really means a lot to hear

I thought this was a lot of fun. Like the previous poster, I definitely felt there were some allusions in there: fairly sure I spotted references to the 2nd Hungarian Rhapsody and to the last movement of the Moonlight. Nice work!

holy crap man! The corelli variation is worth the price of admission right there. I am alone on my couch and outloud said "Wow thats f***ing genius" and then played it back again. Well done well done.
Just here to lurk and cringe at my old posts now.
