Liszt´s arrangement of Smetana´s Polka
on: August 02, 2020, 02:24:46 PM
Hello,
recently in list of Liszt´s catalogue of works I stumbled upon an arrangement of Smetana´s Polka de Salon no.1 in F-sharp major. I am infinitely curious about this piece, but I have no idea where to find it, or whether it even exists to this day. Does anyone have a clue where to begin, where to find the sheet music for example? Thanks.

Is this what you mean?

If it is, there must be sheet music somewhere. There's always the Liszt Society on Facebook.

It doesn't help that there are catalogue errors still being discovered and corrected for

The work is barley a separate work by Liszt hence it's omission from most collections, these are album leaves fragments unfinished sketches etc

The polka is part of a set of pieces where liszt did an Intro to the finished work of a friend or other composer, and a concluding coda ,usually then seeking feed back from them or their thoughts on it,sometimes some of these efforts are a single br or two of his rework or addition so there's it if minor bits of stuff in his catalogue

So that's the skinny on this per Howard's  remakrs on the Hyperion insert

Einleitung und Coda zu Smetanas Polka also appeared in the Liszt-Pedagögium, but had the great fortune to be republished with the Smetana piece in an encore album edited by the much-missed virtuoso Raymond Lewenthal.
